‘Shree Ram Bharat Milan-1965’, a mythological movie was directed by Manibhai Vyas for R.M. Art Productions, Bombay. It was produced by Ratan and Mohan and presented by Pt Madhur and S.P. Mangal. As mentioned by me in my earlier posts for this movie’s songs, this movie covers the story of Ramayana starting from ‘Seeta Swayamwar’, ‘Kaikeyi’s seeking the throne for her son Bharat, and ‘vanvaas’ to Shree Raam in lieu of the two boons that Raja Dashrath had granted her earlier, ‘Bharat’s not accepting the throne and instead carrying Raam’s ‘paadukaa’ and worshipping it, and finally Raja Raam’s coming back to Ayodhya after fourteen years of ‘vanvaas’.

Today’s song is from an unknown film of 1948 – Adalat-1948.

1948 was an year when the filmmakers breathed a sigh of relief, because now there was no restriction on making films openly on our Independence efforts or having songs of patriotism and Indian culture.

Film Shaheed made by Filmistan was based on the 1942 Quit India Movement. This was Dilip Kumar’s first Hit film.

Bombay Talkies made Majboor on the exit of the British from India. There was a song also describing it.

Internationally famous dancer Uday Shankar made ‘Kalpana’ glorifying different dances of india. It ran well in Calcutta, but other places it had a lukewarm reception.

Suhag Raat by Kidar Sharma -his best in career- presented Geeta Bali (who resembled his wife Kamla Chaterjee), as a Heroine for the first time. She too did justice to her role.

Raj Kapoor established his RK Studio and made Aag with 3 heroines- Nargis, Kamini Kaushal and Nigar Sultana. He did not match them, but managed well with good songs.

Another Dilip film Mela was full of melodious songs. Suraiya’s Pyar ki jeet too was a musical.

Chandralekha from the South created history with its impressive challenge to Hindi films. Lavishly made and released with over 600 prints all over India at the same time it indicated the future competition from southern films !

Dev Anand’s Vidya and Ziddi made an impression.

Kishore Kumar sang his first song in Ziddi. Asha Bhosle sang her first solo in Chunaria.

Anokhi Ada with veteran Naseem and Surendra was successful.

Grihasthi, Pagdi, Gopinath, Nadiya ke Paar etc were other notable films.

Among these famous and hit films, a film made with artists who were unknown to Hindi film audiences had no chance to succeed. Additionally, the film had nothing unusual about it…story, music, songs or anything else It was the first film with this title. Later on came the more famous and successful film Adalat in 1958 and then Adalat in 1976.

This film was produced by Mangal Pictures. It was directed by Vasant Joglekar and the music was provided by Datta Davjekar, for songs written by Mahipal and Narendra Sharma. Yes, he is the same Mahipal who became a regular feature in 131 Hindi Stunt, Action, Costume, Historical and Mythological films. Incidentally, Adalat-48 was Mahipal’s last film as a Lyricist. he wrote 13 songs in 4 Hindi films.

The cast of the film was Baburao Pendharkar (brother of Bhalji Pendharkar),Salvi, Jog, Madgulkar, Jaysingh, Saroj Borkar, Sudha Apte, Nalini Dhere, Shalini and Rajan (Jawale). The cast, MD, Director all singers except Mohd.Rafi were Marathi people. Most of them are unknown to Hindi audiences.

Jaysingh was the son of director Bhalji Pendharkar, from his first wife. From his second wife(Miss Leela aka Leela Chandragiri) he got another son Prabhakar. Combining the names of these two sons, Bhalji named his new studio “Jayprabha” at Kolhapur. During the riots against the Bramhins, after the murder of Gandhi, this studio was burnt, because Bhalji Pendharkar was a Brahmin. The studio was rebuilt. It was later purchased by Lata Mangeshkar, only to get embroiled in court cases with the Maharashtra Government, for a long time.

Actor Rajan (Jawle) was a Marathi actor. He is the person who lived with and looked after actress Hansa Wadkar in her later bad days in her life, till she died. Actress Nalini Dhere was a Marathi actress but had done few Hindi films like Nagad Narayan-43 etc. In Hindi film industry, at some or the other times, there were as many as 8 Nalini’s operating as actresses and singers – Nalini Tarkhad, Nalini Jaywant, Nalini Nagpurkar, Nalini Gupte, Nalini Dhere, Nalini Saraf (who became Seema Deo-wife of actor Ramesh Deo), Nalini Chonkar and Nalini Korgaonkar (singer-Jail Yatra-47).

Our film industry is full of ungrateful people. There is nothing like true friendship here. So called friends do not hesitate to cut the throat of others for selfish purposes. There are hundreds of such instances here. However for every rule there is an exception and there was ONE friendship which was used as an example here. That is the friendship of Vasant Joglekar and Ashok Kumar. They were true friends and their friendship ended only when Joglekar died.

Vasant Joglekar, actor-by compulsion and producer/Director-by choice was born on the Christmas day, 25th September 1914 at Nagpur. He started his filmi career as asstt. to Master Vinayak in 1942. In the struggling days he met Ashok Kumar and they became friends forever.

Starting with Aap ki seva mein-47, in which Lata Mangeshkar sang her first Hindi film solo, Joglekar produced 10 films and directed 20 films ( 11 Hindi and 9 Marathi). In one of the Marathi films directed by this young man-Vasant Joglekar, actress Sumati Gupte was acting in it. They fell in love and soon got married in 1943. Sumati became Sumati Gupte Joglekar. In due course, the couple had 3 daughters- Meera, Chanda and Madhushri.

In almost all his films Ashok Kumar was a fixture. There was a time when Ashok kumar was involved in 30 films at one time, still the 31st film was that of Joglekar. The only condition Dadamuni used to put was that Joglekar’s wife, actress/housewife Sumati Gupte Joglekar should provide him food Tiffin cooked by her own hands, at the shooting place ! . He was very fond of her cooking. No wonder, Sumati was a CKP by birth-a fish eater and Bangali babu liked Fish dishes very much !

Joglekar’s Filmography as a Director in Hindi films – Aap ki sewa mein-47, Adalat-48, Nand Kishore-51, Jeet Kiski-52, Firdaus-53, Samaj-54, Karigar-58, Aanchal-60, Aaj aur kal-63, Ek Kali Muskayee-68 and last film Prarthana-69. Vasant Joglekar tried to promote his daughter Meera as a Heroine in Hindi films, with the film Ek Kali Muskayee-68. However, she was not successful and the film was a flop. Vasant Joglekar died on 13-1-1993.

One of the cast members was G.D.Madgulkar. Though this name is unknown to most Hindi film lovers, he has contributed to films in a substantial way In marathi literature and films, his name is taken with respect. Gajanan Digambar Madguḷkar (1 October 1919 – 14 December 1977) was a Marathi poet, lyricist, writer and actor. He was born in village Shetphal, Atpadi Taluka, Sangli district in Maharashtra. His family hailed from village Madgule in the same Taluka.

He is popularly known in his home state of Maharashtra by just his initials as Ga Di Ma (गदिमा). He was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1951 and Padma Shri in 1969. He has written 157 screen plays and over 2000 songs in his career. He was called Adhunik Valmiki (the modern Valmiki) of the current era due to his composition of Geet Ramayan ( Ramayana in Songs) as the most notable work. 2019 was celebrated as his Birth Century year. The Government of Maharashtra hosted various events and festivals to grace the occasion.

Madgulkar wrote poetry, short stories, novels, autobiographies and scripts, dialogues and lyrics for Marathi as well as Hindi movies. His poems have been adapted to a wide range of musical forms such as Sugam-Sangeet (light music), Bhav-Geet (emotional songs), Bhakti-Geet (devotional songs), and Lawani (a genre of folk songs in Maharashtra). Madgulkar entered the world of movies in 1938 at Kolhāpur. He contributed to 157 Marathi and 25 Hindi movies. He was also an artist. He loved to draw nature scenes. Special mention must be made for the films, Jeewan Jyoti-53-S/play and dialogues, Toofan aur Diya-56- story, and Do aankhen barah haath-57-Story, S/play and dialogues.

A noteworthy fact about Madgulkar is that during his peak period in Marathi films, he created a World Record. He teamed up with Music Director Sudhir Phadke and director Raja Paranjape. Together, as a team, they gave a total of 11 Hit films,in a row in 18 years- from 1948 to 1966 … a record for a Team.

He had knowledge of 10 languages including Marathi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.

Madgulkar was married to Vidya (Padma Patankar, Kolhapur) and they had 3 sons (Shridhar, Anand, Sharad Kumar) and 4 daughters (Varsha, Kalpalata, Deepa, Shubhada). The popular Marathi writer, Vyankatesh Madgulkar was his younger brother.

His home in Pune (‘Panchavati Bungalow’) has become a place of attraction for his fans.

I was based in Poona during the period 1974 to 1976. In this period one of my local friends took me to Madgulkar’s bungalow and introduced me. When Madgulkar came to know that I hailed from Hyderabad, he was very excited and asked me several questions. I spent about 4-5 hours with him and had lunch also with him, on his repeated insistence. He was a good conversionist and loved to talk and listen. I will never forget this meeting. Those days he was not keeping good health.

I have not seen this film, but I know that this was a film based on a Love marriage which goes sour ending up in a family court for a divorce. However, the skillful judge tries and the couple reunite with greater love and return to their sweet home happily.

Here is a 77 year old song, sung by V.S.Jog. This must be his first song on this Blog. V.S. Jog was a notable Indian actor, primarily known for his work in Marathi films and theatre, with notable films including Pratibha (1937), Lagna Pahave Karun (1940), and Amrit (1941). He was involved in the Marathi theatre scene, particularly in a period when naturalism was gaining prominence, with connections to the Natyamanwantar group and actor-writer K. Narayan Kale.

He made a comedy pair with Damuanna Malavankar. He also was ‘Gundyabhau’ in some films of a known popular character ‘Chimanrao’, along with Damuanna Malavankar.
Enjoy the song….

India is a land of vast diversity in its culture and traditions. However, the underlying theme of Unity in this diversity has remained intact for centuries. Diversity of India has enriched the country and has provided the glue to bind the country together. There are different languages, different religions, diverse culture and diverse customs and traditions. But, among these diversities there are festivals and pilgrimages that bond us together spiritually.

Today’s song is from the religious film ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan’-1963.

This film was produced by Mahipatrai Shah, under the banner of “Roop kala pictures”. He is the same person who had also produced, along with his brother Anupchand Shah, the film “Begunah”-1957 under their banner Roop Kamal Chitra. These brothers were from Saurashtra in Gujarat. They had already produced three films, namely ‘Shri Vishnu Bhagwan’-1951, ‘Adhikar’-1954 and ‘Riyasat’-1955.

Tu Chhupi Hai Kahaan
Main Tadapta Yahaan. . .

The anguished voice of Diwakar, the poet, that begins as a whisper from a famished throat, rises up to the heavens, as the poet is so painfully trying to search for his creativity – his muse, his love of life, a fantasy woman whom he has woven into his writings.

Mohini, whom he meets often at many a turn of the passages of life, is the romance that is rooted in his imagination, the power of creativity that propels his pen to create music and songs which are not understood, not accepted by his family and dear ones.

Today’s song is from a ‘C’ grade stunt film Al Hilal aka The judgement of Allah- 1958.

Those readers who keep a track of old films may remember that way back in 1935, Sagar Movietone had produced a film of the same name Al Hilal. It was the first film of Mehboob Khan as a Director and the film had Kumar and Sitara Devi as the lead pair. That film was quite successful and even Baburao Patel of Film India magazine had praised not only the film but also hailed Mehboob Khan as a Diamond for Future.
