Today’s song is a typical Kishore Kumar song from the film Jhumroo(1961). I have selected this song for two reasons. One, any song of Kishore Kumar-before the 70s- is loved by me and Two, this song has revived the memories of my college days.

The film is making its debut on the blog with an extraordinary song, least expected from a composer who was known for melodious soft tunes based on either Raag or Robindra Sangeet….. Salil Chowdhari. The unlikely singers of this peculiar song are Shamshad Begum and Manna Dey.

This song is from the film Pehli Raat-59. This patently Tear- Jerker film was made by A.A.Nadiyadwala’s Pushpa Pictures and it was directed by P.L.Santoshi who, once upon a time used to be a man with a Magic Wand. Ravi was the music director. Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist. This duet is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Manna Dey. The cast of the film was Sohrab Modi, Nimmi, Rehman, Nanda, Sudesh Kumar, Lalita Pawar, Johnny Walker etc.

The inboxes on my email, mobile and YouTube account seems to be getting as many reminder messages these days, as messages for request. 🙂 This song apparently has not yet surfaced in public domain. And for those who have heard it, and remember it, this is a vintage Chitragupt melody – stuff that memory ticklers are made of. I got requests from more than one friend (Arvinder ji included, of course) to post this song. And our dear friend Manju ji (daughter of producer director K Amarnath) is also waiting for this song.

As I search for songs of Rafi Sb, I continue to find unheard and obscure gems, that make one wonder – where have these songs been hiding so far. And more importantly, continue to marvel more and more at the versatility of Rafi Sb’s voice and the depth of his emotional connect with the intent of the song. When I picked out this song and heard it, the one word that flashed in my mind was ‘free spirit’. This song is meant to be a freewheeling song of a wanderer, who has no roots. As the song progresses, the mind catches the attention of the feeling of lightness one experiences, as the sounds of Rafi Sb’s voice sink into the mind. The sound is coming almost as if from the skies, light as the wind. It carries a plucky feeling of a carefree heart that is joyous in its rootlessness. I am so enchanted by the emotional expression in this song that today I actually went ahead and created a new category – ‘Free Spirit Song’.

Two days ago, Suman ji completed the 79th milestone of her melodic life. It is so hard to believe that she is now so senior in years. Some months back, maybe almost a year, she was in Delhi and was present on stage for a singing performance. Unfortunately I myself was not able to make it. But other friends who had attended had said that she continues to be as impressive in her voice, as she was before. Still as sweet, and ‘sureeli’ as Bharat ji would put it.
