Today’s song is from the film Naulaakha Haar-1953.

Making films on folklore – well known or less known – is easy, because a lot of liberties can be taken while making the film. There is no copyright or any authentic version of any folklore. The same story may circulate in different regions/states in a different garb. Film Naulaakha Haar-1953 was also based on the love story of Alha- Udal.

Today’s song is from a ‘Social’ film Chaar Chaand-1953.

Actually there was nothing ‘Social’ about this film. It was a simple, worn out story of a Raj Kumar and a wicked Vazier (Dewan). They both love the same girl. Additionally, there was an identical pair of sisters too, to add masala to the story.

Today’s song is from the film Fariyadi-1953.

The film was produced by Habeeb Sarhadi, under his own banner Habeeb productions, Bombay. It was also directed by him only. There were two Music Directors, namely B.N.Bali and Gulshan Soofi. Gulshan Soofi was a multifaceted artiste. He had acted in 7 films, as a singer, he had sung 14 songs in 7 films and as a Music Director he gave music to 11 film, composing 66 songs. This social film had a cast of Rahman, Shakuntala, H.Prakash, W.M.Khan, Mirza Musharaff, Jankidas and others. All the 8 songs of this film were written by Lyricist Mujaffar Orakzai (what a strange name !). He gave music to one more film-Anokha jungle-1956.

Today’s song is quite a rare song. It is from film Khush Raho-49. This was a C grade stunt film, made by Sushil pictures, Bombay. Directed by Harbans,it had music by Shiv Dayal Batish. I say this is a rare song, for 2 reasons. One- in most cases, producers of stunt films were not interested in making commercial records of songs of their films. Reason – Usually, the composers of such low budget films were also unknown or less known composers. If at all, a well known composer was there, he rarely gave his best shot to stunt film, which attracted a fixed, low class audience. Second – Music or songs were not what attracted the audience of stunt films. So the songs rarely became well known and the records-if brought out at all-did not sell.

“Dilruba” (1950) was directed by Dwarka Khosla for Lotus Orient Films, Bombay. The movie had Rehana, Dev Anand, Yakoob, Cuckoo, Balam, Achala Sachdev, Gogia Pasha etc in it.

This movie had eleven songs in it which were penned by six lyricists. The breakup of lyricists is known for six songs. Lyricists for the remaining five songs are not known. P L Santoshi and D N Madhok are among the six lyricists and the songs penned by them are not known. So most likely these two lyricists had penned some/ most/all of these five songs.

Nainon se nain milaa ke – song no. 13
—————————————-

I have noticed only today in the stats page that Rafi Sahab has just crossed the milestone of 2200 songs in the blog. The event went unnoticed and unacknowledged. So it may be alright to celebrate the occasion with another Rafi duet song in this series. Point to be noted here is all solos by Rafi sahab that could have matched this theme were already covered in the blog, leaving a host of duets with less famous female singers, which I have covered in this series.
