Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable – Song No. 10
—————————————————

Remembering Rafi Sahab on his 35th death anniversary :

When I heard this song for the first time a few days ago, I was looking for a Roshan song to post on 14th July for the birth anniversary of the maestro. This song when heard properly, is surely a masterpiece by its creators. I promptly wrote a post and sent it to Atul ji and Sudhir Sir, without checking properly if I got the correct ‘Roshan’. As it turned out this song is composed by Roshan Lal Khatri, and not Roshanlal Nagrath, whose birth anniversary it was on 14th July.

Today is the 31st of July 2015.

For lovers of Hindi music, especially that of yesteryear, this date has a special significance and immediate recall.

This is the date, 35 years ago, that Mohammad Rafi (who I always refer to as Rafisaab), left us.

“Mujhko mere baad zamaana dhoondhegaa”.
“Caravaan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe”.
These were words that proved to be prophetic. In the monsoon of 1980 we had to bid good bye to The Mohd. Rafi.

It has been 35 years since Mohammad Rafi left this world. Unbelievable. Our statistics page says that there are around 4845 songs sung by him in Hindi films. (Wikipedia puts a figure of around 5000). And we are past 2400 (as per the latest updation). So we still have around 2400 songs to go. That means fodder for our blog for another few years I suppose. And all the fans of Rafisaab in our Atuldom can get to work to reach out to all his songs. It is actually not that difficult a job.

On our blog we already have a film titled ‘Ustaad Pedro-1951’. There was a film titled as only ‘Pedro-1960’ which is yet to make a debut on the blog.

Today we have a song from the film ‘Ustaad Pedro’ which came in 1971. This film was passed by the censor board on 28.09.1971. If we in this blog pride ourselves in the fact that we “dig” (literally and figuratively) old and obscure songs and share our findings, there have been other HFM lovers who have dug out information about lesser known artists from the past and brought them to limelight. Greta (Memsaab) has done a yeoman’s service in helping bring lesser known faces of Hindi movies to limelight. It is because of her amazing researches on lesser known artists that we now remember the names of artists like Nazir Kashmiri, Laxmi Chhaayaa, Bela Bose, Ted Lyons etc. In fact, I became aware of lead artists like Shakila, Shyama etc mainly because of her articles in her blog. This was in addition to her love for artists like Shammi Kapoor, Dara Singh, Ranjeet etc, of course.

When I started collecting cassettes in 1985, I was very crazy about purchasing of cassettes at regular intervals; I was always searching for songs of old films (especially of Rajesh Khanna films at that time).

It was my practice, beginning from 8th standard onwards that I would take up some part time job during my vacations which I would give up as classes would resume. I had taken up a part time job during the vacation period after class 12th as well, but unlike the previous years, I did not go back to my classes this time, rather I continued with this job since I was aware that I was going to fail in my exams.

My list of ‘songs that create nostalgia and brings back memories’ include many songs sung by Rafi Saab, viz. ‘jhoomta saawan dekho aaya’, ‘shikaar karne ko aaye shikaar hoke chale’ etc.

The song under discussion today is one of those songs. When this film was released I was one year old, so I think that I must have watched this film when I must be of 5 or 6 years old.

“Black Cat”(1959) was directed by N A Ansari. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Minu Mumtaz, N A Ansari, Johnny Walker, Mumtaz Begum, Shammi, Hari Shivdasani, Tun Tun etc in it. From the comments of our readers in earlier songs of this movie, it is known that it was a chor police movie where Balraj Sahni is the police and he is in love with Minu Mumtaz. It turns out that Minu Mumtaz’s brother, N A Ansari is the boss of a smuggling gang. His gang is named after his pet- a black cat.
