Raag Maalikaa in Hindi Films – 14

The streets of cities and town all around India looked deserted, when from 25 January 1987 to 31 July 1988, “Mangal Bhavan Amangalhaarri” was heard on Doordarshan TV, The title of the famous Serial ‘Ramayana’. Initially Jaidev-ji was the MD for the serial, but soon after his death, Ravindra Jain took over the responsibility. Most of us had enjoyed the serial enormously.

In this blog I dream of the day when we will cover so many songs that our readers will struggle to give me the farmaish for undiscussed songs.:) Considering the number of songs that are not yet discussed in the blog, that day is far off. But there are very few cases where we have reached that stage already. For instance, we have covered all the available Hindi film/ non film songs of K L Saigal and there are no K L Saigal left to be covered. The film Sapnay(1997), was dubbed from a TeleguTamil Film named “minsaara Kanavu”. I found this while looking for information about the story etc. here. I have seen this movie, maybe once or maybe in parts. I remembered a part of the story and songs, which were very melodious. The song “Chanda re chanda re” is a favourite with me for many reasons. First is the melody, which makes it such a hummable song. I especially like the interlude music, which makes Kajol respond and start singing with Prabhu Deva. And the way it is picturized next to an ‘urban pond’ with slum dwellers living around it. And the most important factor of all is Prabhu Deva’s choreography and dance, and the non-serious way he is treating the whole thing. I am guessing Prabhu Deva is the choreographer here, as he is a choreographer first than a dancer, then an actor turned action director to full fledge Film Director, when last heard.

A superb song picturised on Vinod Khanna, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Shafi Inaamdaar, etc. ( Can someone tell me the name of the lady playing Shafi’s wife ?).

For a long time, I thought that this song was sung by Kishore Kumar. Now it turns out that it is sung by Kumar Sanu. The Kishore Kumar clone that Kumar Sanu is, he has sung this song superbly and it has got to be one of his best songs ever. Sadhana Sargam, who makes her first appearance in this blog, sounds so sweet, almost sugar like.
