When one talks of tragic actors, what are the names that come to mind ? Guru Dutt and Meena Kumari ? It may be news for people, but in the first decade of their career viz 1950s, they were both known for playing positive, energetic ,bubbly characters oozing with zest for life.

The crown for being the first major tragedy queen of that era should rightfully belong to Nutan. She played quite a few memorable tragic roles in movies. She in fact played a tragic role as early as in 1955 in a movie called “Seema”.

Mukesh sings a wonderful philosophical song penned by Shailendra and set to tune by Shankar Jaikishan. The movie is Aah, a Raj Kapoor starrer.

Raj Kapoor is very much present in the picturisation of this song, but this song is not picturised on Raj Kapoor. Then who has the audacity to sing it on the screen ? Well, the bullock cart driver who carries Raj kapoor on his cart sings it. And it is no character artist. Look closely, it is Mukesh himself who is the bullock card driver and who sings this song on screen.

Guide had some awesome songs. Not only did they become very popular among public, even creators of bollywood music ( singers, lyricists, music directors) voted Guide as the biggest musical blockbuster bollywood movie, with as many as 3 songs of this movie being adjusted among the top 20 songs of all time. ( Source – Outlook magazine january 2006 issue)

This particular song from Guide is a very difficult song to sing, but Lata had sung it outstandingly. As I have mentioned quite a few times in this blog, Lata was at the peak of her singing prowess in 1960s, and this song is yet another example of that assertion.

“Dil ek mandir” is one of those musical blockbusters that were common in 1950s and 60s, where almost every song would become very popular and even evergreen.

I have heard this song “ruk jaa raat thahar ja re chanda” many times, often without knowing which movie the song is from. I have never seen the movie, and I had not seen the video of the song either till recently.

For sleeping, you have options like listening to lories ( if you are young), or counting sheep ( if you are not that young), trying to do homework etc.

But what about waking up ? There is no lori equivalent of songs to choose from when it comes to waking people up. In its absence, people resort to mechanical contraption viz alarm clocks or biological contraption viz ghar ka murga giving “baang” etc.

1960s, the golden era of Bollywood filmy songs saw hundreds of memorable songs. They drew from folk music, theatre etc. The lyrics were often shayari.

Here is a song where the lyrics and music was totally drawn from real down to earth life in UP/Bihar. In this song, people gather around a village gawaiyya, and the song being sung talks about what a small bird ( muniya) does to the stuffs of halvayi, bajaj, and panwaadi. The song is accompanied by fast paced music on harmonium and dholak that rises to a crescendo towards the end of the stanzas as well as towards the end of the song.

“Bandini” was a movie that had some of the saddest songs one can come across. Each of these songs could move the audience, not only when the movie was released, but even today, some 45 years later.

Circumstances force Nutan to leave her home without informing anyone, and she leaves her home one night. Of course, she did not know what lay in store for her.

People like me tend to classify bollywood songs simply between sad and happy songs. But there could be so many variations to each of these themes. For instance, sad songs could have so many shades. Mukesh has sung so many sad songs, and they all are different from each other.
