When one talks of a movie called “Baazi”, one normally means the Dev Anand- Geeta Bali starrer of 1952. It turns out that there was another movie with the same title 32 years later. This movie “Baazi” (1984) was a Dharmendra Rekha starrer and it did not have much impact at the box office.

When I had watched “Mother India” (1957) for the first time during late 1970s/ early 1980s, I did not realise that the movie had so many songs in it. I throught that the movie have about five or six songs in it. As it is, we have already discussed as many as ten songs from this movie in the blog and there are some more songs still left to be discussed.

Shammi Kapoor had acted in over a dozen films as a lead actor in early 50s, most of which flopped at the box office. Chor Bazaar (1954) was one film. It was produced under the banner of All India Pictures and it was directed by P N Arora. The star cast included Shammi Kapoor, Sumitra Devi, Chitra, Om Prakash, Kammo, Amir, Cuckoo. Parshuram etc with a guest appearance by Wasti. This film had six songs all written by Shakeel Badayuni and set to music by Sardar Malik. I remembered the name of this film only because of an immortal song “huyi ye hamse naadaani teri mehefil mein aa baithhe” from this film which I had heard on my younger days on radio. I did not find one song ” Har dar ki thokerein hain” sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the VCD.

My browsing through non-filmy songs on the internet for the last few months have been like a nostalgic journey in the down memory lane. Some of the NFSs I have listened to in the recent period took me back to 60s and 70s when I had heard those on the radio. I had completely forgotten some of them until I rediscovered them on the internet. My latest rediscovery of a non-fllmy ghazal is less than 24 hours old but I have already listened to it umpteen times and still listening. This Shakeel Badayuni’s ghazal is ‘nazar nawaz nazaaron mein jee nahin lagtaa’ sung by Shanti Hiranand, a well known classical vocalist and a disciple of Mallika-e-Ghazal Begum Akhtar. I has heard this ghazal many times in the 60s on the radio but had completely forgotten it until I came across the audio clip of this ghazal again.
