Today’s song is from a film Rakhi-1949. This social film was made by Prakash Pictures,Bombay. It was directed by Dr. Shanti kumar ( he is different than the composer Shanti Kumar Desai). The 10 melodious songs were composed by the Melody-Magicians Husnlal-Bhagatram.
Most of us know that Husnlal and Bhagatram were the brothers of Pt. Amarnath- the eldest brother, who too was a well known, pre Independence music director. However, How many of us know that out of this pair, Bhagatram was the elder brother ? Have you anytime wondered why the younger brother’s name comes first in this pair ?

From the title itself one would know what type of film this could be. In our childhood we were fond of, first listening and then reading stories of Raja-Rani. As we grow older, this liking seems to have ended, but it is not so, in reality. Today’s song is from film Nakhre-51. It is sung by Devendra Mohan, Shamshad Begum and chorus. This is a foot tapping song, reminding of a Vinod or O P Nayyar song.The tune of this song resembles a more well known song of later period,but I am unable to identify it. This is a second successive song I am discussing, after song from “Hawai Khatola”-46 which also had a similar tune to some other song.
I have come across umpteen number of songs from Hindi films which have similar tunes-in part or the whole song. I am not talking of Parody songs, because Parody songs obviously use a popular tune to make fun of it,with different but funny lyrics. Here the intention is to make a comedy song.

Shamshad Begum, a name too familiar to music lovers of the golden era was born on this day 100 years ago (on 14 april 1919). Her voice, much distinct from all others had that metallic as well as melodious touch which brought her fame from all over the country.
April 14 did ring a bell, but I was not very much aware that it was her birth centenary this year. A comment from one of the regulars Partha Chanda ji on the anniversary pages was enough for me to get this post going.

Today’s song is from the film Dekho ji-47.
The film was made by Punjab Film Corporation and was produced and directed by its owner Wali Sahab. He also wrote the lyrics. The music was by Tufail Faruqi and his assistant Sabir Hussain ( 5 and 6 songs credited respectively).
This was one of the films of 1947, from which almost everyone- the cast, producer, director, lyricist, composers etc etc all migrated to Pakistan after Partition- some immediately and few after some time. This was of course not unusual. As the year 1947 began, news was circulating about the partition. Like many other industries, Film industry was also worried. There was an air of uncertainty. Who will stay and who will migrate was hotly debated in the privacy of homes, studios and clubs. People looked at each others with suspicion. Muslims were worried about their safety in India, in spite of the assurances by Gandhi and Nehru.
