‘ढ’
“ढोलक को खूब बजाओ, जानी को खूब नचाओ”
Today’s alphabet letter has been the most elusive to locate. Statistically, ‘ढ’ is one of the lesser used letters, and so, the songs starting with words starting with this alphabet are comparatively fewer in number. As I was poring through the song lists from various sources, the search always ended with just three songs starting with ‘ढ’. And incidentally, these three are well known songs, and are already posted on our blog. The search through the lists, whether from Geet Kosh or other sources, is sometimes a problem, because at times a leading couplet appears in the beginning, and ‘mukhda’ of the song appears in the later part of the title. Searching for such words in the title is a difficult and tedious task. But after some extra effort I was able to identify this song. Then I went back into the Geet Kosh again, and confirmed that the ‘mukhda’ of this song indeed starts with the word ‘ढोलक’.

‘ऊ’
“ऊंची एड़ी है मांग टेड़ी टेड़ी दुपट्टा रंगदार कर के”
I am glad that I posted this song when I did. As per my search, this is possibly the last song of Rafi Sb that starts with ‘ऊ’, and not yet posted on our blog. Just made it by cat’s whiskers. Otherwise, I would have been expressing regrets, just like for ‘ई’. 🙂

Remembering Shamshad Begum on the second anniversary of her passing away (23rd April 2013). Born in Lahore on 14th April 1919, Shamshad Begum had an inclination towards singing right from her school days. Her school principal impressed with her singing, made her sing the classroom prayers, something which Naushad captilised elegantly in ‘Dard’ (1947) for a group song.

Ok so now we know – प्यार किसे कहते हैं। (what is this thing we call love). Explained quite lucidly in this song.
jabse mili teri meethi mohabbat
chocolate ka khaana chhod diya
Discovering your sweet love
Have forsaken even chocolate
Aah, what a sublime sacrifice, forsaking the delicious trappings of this world, all for having found love. Nothing, no other sacrifice could be more convincing.

New year comes only once in 365 days and as such the chances of there being too many new year songs are slim, but such songs are there in Hindi movies. We have discussed such songs in the previous new year occasions and we have a few such songs lined up for this new year of 2013 as well.

It is a very old song, exactly 62 years old to be precise. The Bollywood movie music then was in the process of evolving and maturing, and was still in a state of transition.

I have posted a great song from “Dholak” (1951) in the past which was sung by Sulochana Kadam. I just now came across another superb song from the same movie.

Though Kishore Kumar had made his singing debut in “Ziddi”(1948) three years ago under the music direction of Khemchand Prakash, it was in 1950s that he was taken by S D Burman under his wings. It was then that Kishore Kumar developed his unique singing style.

Many movies have been made in Bollywood on the story of Alibaba and forty thieves. The first such movie, that I am aware of, was made in 1954. It was a C grade movie and it had Mahipal and Shakila in lead roles.
