‘Ankur’ (1974), the first Hindi feature film made by Shyam Benegal gave push to the movement of new wave films (also called as the parallel cinema) in Hindi film industry. Perhaps, it was the first Hindi parallel film, that too in a rural setting, which became a commercial success. His next two films, ‘Nishant’ (1975) and ‘Manthan’ (1976) was also based in rural setting, and they were also commercially successful. Shyam Bengal had made some more such films like ‘Kondura; (1980), ‘Aarohan’ (1982), ‘Susman’ (1987) etc which were critically acclaimed. But these latter films did not receive the same reception from the film audience as his first three films.

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 10
———————————————————————

I have just finished noting down lyrics of the song I have chosen – it has taken me one hour at least. I have listened to the song close to 4-5 times. I had to listen to some parts again and again trying to figure out what the singer was saying, revise my lyrics and note down which portions were sung by the male or female singer and which was sung by them both. I do this only once in a while, not being the owner of the blog but an occasional participant. It made me appreciate more and more the amount of dedication the usual writers put in. To combine all this with a write up to explain the song, add anecdotes related to the song and sometimes, stories that led to the song is all hard work, believe me. In this age and time of quick fixes, short cuts, bullet points and shortened attention spans it is difficult to even understand this kind of dedication.

Hullo to all in atuldom

The city of Calcutta–1962. A city so vibrant, so alive, so stylish, it was referred to as “The Paris of the East”. This exotic backdrop serves as the perfect locale for the tender, immortal love story about to unfold.

The shelf life of a Hindi pop (also called Indipop) song is generally very short. But one that has smitten me seems to be an exception. I have been watching the video clip of the song over a year. The more I listened, more I was curious to know as to why I liked this pop song especially when I have not been a great admirer of such genre of songs.

Regulars of this blog meeting with one another on a one to one basis has been going on from 2010 onwards. It first happened in Nagpur, when Raja ( my long time online acquintance since 2004) decided to pay a visit to Nagpur to meet me as well as another Nagpur based fellow cricket and HFM enthusiast. Friday, 29 october 2010 became the first occasion when I met a blog contributor and it was Raja, who also happened to be the first visitor, first commentor, first guest contributor etc etc of the blog. This meeting that lasted some three hours was a memorable occasion for me. I had mentioned this meeting in a writeup that I posted the next day.

Chaandni Raaten – Song No. 9
——————————-

This song is simply my most favourite ‘chaand’ song of the 21st century. The last two decades had a few such music scores in Hindi films, ‘ Khaamoshi ‘ and ‘Parineeta’ are among them which made the decades bearable musically. Favourite ‘chaand’ song from the 90’s is here. Melody in film songs was still trying to keep its head above the general cacophony which passed for music and entertainment.

Chandni Raaten – Song no. 3

‘Have you ever seen such stars?’ she asked.

‘You asked me that last night. You need some new material.’

‘Well, they’re worth a second mention.’ Read more on this topic…

When I was pointed into the right direction, i.e. JK Rowling and Harry Potter, then the mystery dissolved away, and the nickname ‘Peevesie’ came out in a better light. And after spending maybe an hour with her, the significance of the nickname also eased itself into my mind. In the Harry Potter series, Peeves is a poltergeist at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, since c. 993. Fond of mischief and chaos, he is known as the spirit of chaos around the school. And so, picking up from her favorite series of teenage adventures, the daughter of Peevesie’s Mom selected this nickname for herself. Hmmm. . . is it that the daughter of Peevesie’s Mom selected this nickname for herself and was then known as Peevesie, or is it that she picked this nickname and then her mom came to be known as Peevesie’s Mom – it is getting a little mixed up in the order in which the things may have happened.

‘Parineeta’ (2005) is one of the aesthetically better movies of the last decade. I had seen this movie on cable TV, but had liked the movie and songs a lot. The movie, cinematography and the understated treatment of the adapted story from Saratchandra Chatterjee’s classic literary piece, were impressive. It is a glamorously packaged product with the subtle nuances. It is directed by Pradeep Sarkar and had Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan playing the lead roles, with supporting cast of Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza, Raima Sen etc. Its crisp editing is also a feature that I had noted back than, while watching the film.

About a month back, I, my wife and four of my close relatives visited Leh-Ladakh on a two week’s trip. Rather than a relaxed holiday, the trip was an experience in itself. A flight from Delhi for Leh meant that there would be an altitude gain from 292 metres in Delhi to 3550 metres in Leh in about one hour time. It was the best option from the point of view of acclimatisation at a higher altitude. So we had to confine ourselves to our hotel rooms in Leh for 24 hours without doing much of an exertion as part of acclimatisation processes for getting used to the lesser oxygen at higher altitude. Furthermore, during our trip, we were to cross three very high altitude mountain passes – Khardung La, the world’s highest motorable road (5600 metre or 18380 feet above sea level) for visiting Nubra Valley, Chang La, the world’s third highest motorable road (5360 metres or 17585 feet) for visiting Pangong Lake and Fotu La ( 4100m or 13480 feet) for going to Kargil. Fortunately, we did not face much of a problem except some mild altitude sickness experienced by two of my relatives which got resolved quickly as we descended.
