When I was a school kid then I found most, if not all subjects as boring. Even out of all these boring subjects, history took the cake. It was extremely difficult to remember the names of the kings, their eras, and what they did during their reign. And in case these kings happened to be born before the era of Christ then remembering their dates of birth and death was even more confusing. 🙂 Emperor Ashok, for instance was born in 304 BC and died in 232 BC. What kind of kings they were who died before they were born, was the doubt in the minds of many students of tender years.

There are some old film and non-filmy songs of 30s and 40s which I was aware of during my childhood not because of the radio or later the internet but by words of mouth. I heard those songs from my parents, relatives and even some friends of our family. During my childhood, I was not very fond of those songs. Later, as a teenager, I had heard some of those songs on Radio Ceylon which gave me a sort of reminder that I had heard those songs earlier. I got 78 RPM records of a few of those songs mostly by accident during early 70s. Since then, I have developed a liking for those type of songs. Later, with the advent of internet, it was a ‘memory recall’ for me when I listened to most of these songs again.

हाँ भई, होली हो और गीतों में रंग न हो तो, तो क्या मज़ा है, हाँ?
बस, भला हो उस ऊपर से ideas देने वाले का। गाने में एक से ज़्यादा आवाज़ हो तो पंक्तियों को color code कर दो। और फिर देखो गीत की लाईनें पढ़ने का मज़ा। और होली के दिन तो बस मज़ा रंगदार गीतों का ही है। सो, पेश है एक ऐसा ही रंगदार पंक्तियों वाला गीत – होली भी और रंग भी, दोनों ही गीत में गुथे हुये मिल गए।

The year is 1957. The time in the Hindi film industry when the big name banners prominently ruled, and the success and recognition of film music was the domain of the high profile music directors. An era with a lot of stories of how Filmfare awards were influenced, and how the privileged songs were made to climb to the top of Binaca Geetmala list. In such a time and such an era, an ‘unprivileged’ song rapidly climbed the charts of popularity, completely defying the set commercial conventions, and confounding the hold of hierarchical tradition of established big names in the industry, it became the no. 1 song of 1957 at the top of Binaca Geetmala charts. The film – an unimpressive and an unremarkable socio-religious drama by the name of ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’. The song – an unmatchable and a very endearing duet by Rafi Sb and Lata Mangeshkar – “Zaraa Saamne To Aa O Chhaliye”, an unlikely song of a human being’s search for the Almighty. A few days back, I came across a song ‘taqdeer ne hansa ke hamen phir rulaa diyaa’ from the film ‘SHAHNAAZ (1948). The song was composed and sung by Ameerbai Karnataki. Until now, I had not heard the name of the film. In fact, except for Ameerbai Karnataki and Mohammed Rafi, most of other names associated with this film are new to me.
