This is a song from Didi (1959) and what a song it is ! It is sung by a female voice other than the usual names. It is Sudha Malhotra who has sung this song. Not just singing, she was also the music director of this song. Lyrics were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

Hemant Kumar was a versatile playback singer as well as music director. He was perhaps the only specialist music director who used to sing as playback singer for other music directors too.

This superb movie called “Khamoshi” not only had a good story line and good actors, it had good music as well. Hemant Kumar’s music and Gulzar’s lyrics were just out of this world.

This movie is known for Bappi Lahiri’s memorable music. This was the second move as a music director for Bappi Lahiri. If his music was good in Zakhmee ( “Jalta hai jia mera bheegi bheegi raaton me”), his music was even better, in fact outstanding in “Chalte Chalte”. Its theme song has become an iconic song.

Most of the ghazals we grew up listening to often had heavy duty high sounding words in them whose meanings few people understood. And people not understanding the words would not admit to it either, fearing that he would fall in the estimation of fellow ghazal lovers with such a confession.

Shola jo bhadke dil mera dhadke

“Albela” was a definitive movie in Bollywood history. Bhagwan, then a C grade movie producer, took a big risk in producing this movie which was a big step forward for him. He took a big financial risk in producing this movie, and his gamble paid off. It is another matter that he failed to replicate the success of this movie in his subsequent movies, and he went back to where he was, before this movie happened.

Jhuki jhuki si nazar

“Arth” was an art movie or parallel movie as low budget movies were described as in those days. Apart from the realistic story line which were supposedly based on the life of Mahesh Bhatt, the movie had some nice ghazals. It was one movie that helped popularise ghazals which was a welcome development considering that the other option in Bollywood filmy music those days used to be “disco” songs.
