I think it is time to go back to the pavillion, meaning my comfort zone. Or I should say my favourite comfort zone of Rafi songs. I have been ‘ beating about the bush ‘ for the last one year and writing posts of various series. ‘Chandni raaten’ is still going on, as far as I know. Some songs are lined up for it, but I have not been able to find enough enthusiasm to write a post for some time. Confined to B/C grade films for a large part of his career, Farooque Kaiser had to wait till 1958 before he could lay his claim to fame based on a song that would be recognized as a popular hit with the listening public.

Greetings to Faryal on her birthday today (3rd November).
When she appeared on the film scene in 1965-66, the she was christened as the Sophia Loren of the Indian film industry. Considered to be one of the more daring cabaret dancers on screen, she actually expressed her extreme dislike for it, stating that primarily she is not a dancer, she never trained to be. But that is the industry and the type casting for you.

A commanding personality to contend with on screen. In whatever role he appears, he has the capacity to be the center of gravity in every scene. In the last scenes of ‘Mere Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971), appearing as the sardaar (leader) of a gang of dacoits, he is down and beaten, by Dharmendra. Even in that scene, he exudes strength, and gives the perception of being the stronger.

Come 1977 and Shatrughan Sinha had been around in films for about 8 years now. He already had two Filmfare awards for best supporting actor under his belt – in 1971 for ‘Paaras’ and 1975 for ‘Dost’. On screen, majority of his roles have a style – freewheeling, assertive and emphatic, whether being the smug good guy or the abrasive bad guy. In the seventies, Shatrughan Sinha was one of the busier actors in the industry, averaging 8 to 9 films a year.

Wow, vintage Rafi, if ever it were.
As I was browsing for the song from 1975, I bumped into this very old friend, whom I had not met for a long time. But oh, what a lovely remembrance this one. A wonderful gem of a song, that is lost in obscurity, even though the film is comparatively not very old.

The pen whose first creations mesmerized everyone with the magic of “Mera Sunder Sapna Beet Gayaa” and “Yaad Karoge Yaad Karoge Ik Din Humko Yaad Karoge”. A dream debut that most artists just think about. He was introduced to Shashadhar Mukherjee, then still with Filmistan, and got the assignment to write for the 1947 film ‘Do Bhai’. Sachin Da took the words and wove a musical magic around them, and gave them to the voice of Geeta Rai (later Geeta Dutt). It need not even be mentioned that the rest is history.
Remembering Raja Mehdi Ali Khan on the anniversary of his passing away (on 29th July). And we couple the remembrance with a celebration – reaching the 200 songs milestone on our blog.
