In Hindi movies sometimes one song follows another in a seamless manner, so that one finds it difficult to realise when one song changes into another.

“Simla Road” (1969) is a quintessential B grade movie which was forgotten almost as soon as it was released. This movie had Dev Kumar and Sarita in lead roles. Dev Kumar later found himself playing roles of villain’s henchman, whereas Sarita vanished from movies without a trace.

“Raat Andheri Thhi” (1967) is a B grade movie about which very little is known these days. Theinformation that I have been able to gather about this movie tells me that this movie had Feroz Khan, Sheikh Mukhtar, Lolita Chaterjee & Helen in it, which makes it an archtypical B grade movie of the 1960s. These movies had Sheikh Mukhtraa playing the same kind of roles that would later be played by amitabh Bachchan in this angrey young man movies. Sheikh Mukhtar would use his bulky figure for strongarm tactics, and he would leave the task of singing and dancing to the chocolate faced side hero of the movie, which happens to be Feroz Khan in this movie.

Aao Pyaar Karen (1964) is a romantic comedy from the house of S Mukherjee, and Filmalya Productions, directed by RK Nayyar. The normal rich-girl-poor-boy-love-story, in this case, is presented as a comedy, and not a sob story. The male lead actor, as with many S Mukherjee productions, is Joy Mukherjee, paired with Saira Banu. At the time of making this movie, both the actors were comparatively fresh in the industry, having made their debut in 1960 (Love In Simla) and 1961 (Junglee). The other key players in the star cast are Rajendranath, Madhavi, Marilyn, Shyam Chatterjee, Jayant Shah etc.

Atul ji and Arun ji have talked about the lady music directors of the 30s and 40s, like Saraswati Devi, Jaddan Bai etc. The careers of these lady composers did not last for very long in the industry. Then in late 1950s, another lady music director made a debut (with Dil Deke Dekho, 1959), and the industry was introduced to Usha Khanna. A career that is still continuing, Usha Khanna has now been active in the industry for a little more than fifty years. Her career was most active in the 1960s and up to the mid 90s, after which her assignments have been few and far between. She never got any Filmfare awards, but in 1983, she was a runner up for the music direction award for the film Souten. In 1979, Yesudas won the best singer award for the song ‘Dil Ke Tukde Tukde Kar Ke Muskuraa Ke Chal Diye’ from the film Dada, with the music composed by Usha Khanna.

The festival of Raksha Bandhan is being celebrated today in many parts of the country. A tradition as old as our culture itself, it is a significant celebration of the brother-sister relationship in our country. By tying a piece of colored auspicious thread on the wrist of her brother, the sister is wishing for his well being, good health and prosperity, and in return the brother is making a promise to protect her and her honor. It is a much loved festival, that occurs on the full moon day of the month of Saawan.
