‘Lalaji’ (1942) was produced by Mehboob Khan under the banner of National Studios and was jointly directed by Chimanlal Gandhi and Lalitchandra Mehta. The star cast included Krishnakant, Yashodara Katju, Yakoob, Vatsala Kumthekar, Amar, Sunalini Devi, Maya Devi, AR Kabuli, Kayam Ali etc. I have no idea about the story of the film. The montages of the film indicate that it was a comedy film with Yakub having an important role as Hiralal and A R Kabuli as Lalaji though the lead pairs of the film were Yashodara Katju and Krishnakant.

Today’s song is from a relatively obscure film, though it was said to be successful in those days. The song is from the film Prabhat-1941 – made by Tarun Pictures. It was directed by a true professional V.M. Vyas, who knew his job so well that 60% of his films were successful at the Box office. He took the best stars always and major singers and composers worked for him. His own banner was Sunrise Pictures, established in early 1941 and in the first 6 months itself his first film ‘ Ghar ki Laaj’ was completed. Prabhat was his second film as a director in 1941.

Today’s song is from Anuradha (1940). There were two more films made with the same title- one in 1960 and the other in 2014. Film Anuradha-1960 was the most well known film of these 3 films. The song of today is ” Chahun oar chaandni chitki hai.” It is written by Lajpat Rai and tuned by the veteran composer Badri Prasad. The song is sung by Vatsala Kumthekar.

It is a well-known fact that when sound films came into being in 1931, majority of the films which were produced, especially in the 1930s, belonged to the genres of action, adventure, costume drama, mythology, fantasy, folk legend etc. There were few takers for films containing social, family drama and romantic themes. In a way, this was the legacy from silent films. Those who produced and directed silent films may have thought it prudent to try more or less the same genres in sound films to begin with.

“Ishaara” (1943) is a movie produced more than seven decades ago. Little information was known about this movie till our own beloved inhouse Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh came to our help. In addition, we also had late Khwaja Sultan Ahmad (brother of music director Khursheed Anwar) as our visitor in the past who shared some unknown facts about the movies. Here are the details of this movie as narrated to us by the two abovementioned knowledgeable experts:

An absolute gem. A duet song from 1938 about which almost no information is available. Just that the film is ‘Baanke Saanwariya’ and the name of the music director is Damodar Sharma. I even checked the actual 78 rpm record of this song, which is available with my friend. Even the names of the singers is not mentioned.
