This is a “new” song for me, though it is from a 1965 movie called “Oonche Log”. The lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri are heavy duty Urdu stuff, which are difficult to decipher. But knowing Majrooh Saab, it must surely mean something profound.

The movie is “Jaane Anjaane”( 1971). This movie was more “anjaane “(unknown) than “jaane”(known) even in those days, not to speak of today as this movie had flopped at the box`office. The movie had an over the hill Shammi Kapoor and a young Leena Chandavarkar in the lead roles.

The value of lyrics in a song is often underestimated, whereas in reality it is the words of the lyrics that influence the listeners immensely. This is a song from “Gumrah”, a 1963 movie showing Mala Sinha at her sacrificing best. In this movie, the kids of her sister ask her to tell a story, and she sings this song “ek thi ladki” (happy version) which she claims to be the story of one of her friends, but as the audience guess correctly, is her own story. This serves as a lullaby and the kids go to sleep peacefully.
