“Satte Pe Satta” (1982) was an adaptation of “Seven Brides for seven brothers”. When Bollywood makers draw inspirations from Western movies, they often spoil the original. This movie is one of the few that manages to remain an enjoyable movie. I have not watched the original, so I cannot say which movie was more fun, but I know for sure that “Satte Pe Satta” had some nice songs that the original movie did not have, 😉

The songs of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971) were big rage during their time. One song that was a huge hit with kids like me was this song “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re”. Overnight, people with Nepali features began to be called Kaanchaa (males) and Kaanchi (females) respectively. One of my acquaintence kid sang this song “Kaanchi re Kaanchi re” addressed to a Nepali girl, hoping to eve tease her, but the girl, instead of feeling offended, sang back “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re” to him. 😉

When one watches old Bollywood movies, one notices that people went about their lives in a laid back and relaxed manner. A typical girl would go to school/ college and while at home she would learn knitting/ cooking etc from her mother. She would also learn singing/ dancing from a tutor who would come to her home to teach her these arts. The girl would display her newly acquired prowess of singing / dancing in front of guests , parents and her guru.

When I watch many movie titles and story lines of old movies, I notice that many of them could not be made today because they would be regarded as politically incorrect in these days of being politically correct. I do not think we can have songs mentioning Bombay, Madras etc nor can we describe people as Junglee, blind, langdaa etc without invoking the wrath of some group of people or the other.
