Hearing the renditions of Saigal Saab is such a idyllic experience. His mastery of the seven sur and the three swara of music is unparalleled. His control on the sound, and its aarohan-avrohan is immense and unmatched. As one listens to his recital, one realizes that the flow of one note into the next is so smooth and effortless, that it is completely un-noticeable. Listening to his voice is like elegant smooth glide through a stream of honey. His resonance takes on a distinct identity of its own, and the printed material carries separate treatment of Saigal, the person and “Saigal, the voice” or “Saigal Ki Awaaz”. In fact, ‘Saigal, the voice’ assumed an identity of its own, and it became a topic of discussion in newspapers and magazines.

A hundred songs ! Given that the film industry generates many thousands of songs every decade, a hundred songs is a small number. But these hundred are special. These hundred belong to a very exclusive set of a total of 185 songs. And this exclusive set is the musical fortune, each song a jewel studded with priceless gems. Available for the pleasure of all, yet this treasure is a mine of gold and diamonds. Priceless, for this is all that is. There cannot be any more additions to these jewels. Yes, I refer to the recorded legacy of Saigal Saab – a list of 185 recordings in all. Of these, 110 belong to Hindi films, 37 are non filmi songs, in Hindi / Urdu. Of the remaining, a set of 30 recordings are part of Bengali cinema, and the remainder are in other languages (Punjabi, Tamil, Persian). So yes, this blog now hosts 100 of the total of 147 renditions (in Hindi/Urdu) by Saigal saab. An important accomplishment and an occasion to celebrate. Congratulations all.

Atul has just brought to my notice that Kishore Kumar’s birthday falls on 4th August. He wanted me to write up a song on this occasion – how could I possibly refuse? For one, it is for Atul’s blog and therefore an honour to be part of it in any possible way. Secondly, it is for Kishore da – and he’s always been close to my heart too. So there was no second thought – and here I am, typing away furiously on my keyboard.

Normally it is believed that old songs are obscure songs and new songs are better known songs. But that is not always the case. I find that several recent songs (anything created in 1970s and later are recent by the standards of this blog. 😀 ) have been forgotten in double quick time.

“Bandish” (1980) was a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. This was a Rajesh Khanna movie in his second phase as an actor after he had lost his superstardom. He tried very hard to regain his superstardom, but it was too late for him by that time. Typically his stellar performance in these movies would meet wit lukewarm response from movie goers. It was in such stark contrast to the response of public in his superstardom days when his appearance in the credits of a movie was all that was needed to bring in the crowds.

Like any young pre teen kid growing up in late 1960s and early 1970s, I was learning new things every day. I would listen to songs blaring from loudspeakers and from radios. It was one fine evening in 1960s that I heard a song coming out from the radio. I had never heard this song before, and I loved the song instantly and unconditionally, as kids tend to do.
