Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

As I discover more songs of ‘Bandhan” (1940), I cannot but help feel that this movie must have stolen the heart of the movie goers during its time and Leela Chitnis would have become a heart throb of public, in case she was not one already. What a lovely performance from her in this movie. In this movie, she plays a playful and cheerful girl who is forever prepared to play a prank or too.

“Kurukshetra” (1945) is one of the lesser known K L Saigal movies, as far as I am concerned. This movie had actors like K L Saigal. Nawab Kashmiri, Shaamlee, Udwwadia, Biman Bannerji, Radha Rani,Ajit,Tara,Agha Mehmood Kashmiri etc. This movie was directed by Rameshwar Sharma.

I have been somewhat preoccupied for last three four days. I have been regularly browsing the new additions to the blog, but have not been able to spend time to add or respond to comments. So I see this message from AK ji, renewing his farmaish for this song. And then read Atul ji’s response, saying that this song is not available online so far. That got me into a scramble; since I have the audio of this song in my collection. “Mastaanaa” (1954) is a movie starring Motilal and Nigar Sultana, who were mainly big name actors of 1940s but who continued to act in 1950s too.

From the picturisation of this song, I guess that Motilal and Nigar Sultana play roadside toy sellers and they have a kid (Master Romi).

The song “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan” and the movie “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan” are different. A song thus titled first appeared in an Ashok Kumar movie called “Bandhan”(1938). The movie “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan” appeared in 1944. This movie too starred Ashok Kumar. So this phrase “Chal Chal Re naujawaan” whether as a song or as a movie title became inextricably associated with Ashok Kumar.

The non film songs of Saigal Saab almost entirely consist of ghazals by various poets. In this category, there is a handful of songs that are not ghazals. But what gems of semi classical creation these are. This particular song has a very unique distinction, making it an important and a rare song. This is probably the only song for which Saigal Saab is the lyricist, composer and singer, all together. Yes, the lyrics of this beautiful song are written by Saigal Saab himself.
