“Naina” (1972) is an obscure movie despite being a movie of recent vintage by the standards of this blog. This movie was produced by Babubhai Shah and directed by Kanak Mishra. The star cast consisted of names like Shashi kapoor, Rajshree,Mousmi Chatterjee, Padma Khanna, Praveen Paul, David Abraham, Rehmaan, Akashdeep, Sanjana, Sunder, Shaukat Kaifi Azmi etc.

Today (19 january) is the date of birth of Kaifi Azmi. To many music lovers of younger generations, he may be a lesser known name, and even to me, he was a “boring” lyricist when I was growing up. Having grown up (hopefully) 🙂 I have come to appreciate Kaifi Azmi better. We have over one hundred Kaifi Azmi songs in this blog and that speaks volumes about the fact that Kaifi Azmi was one of the major contributors in making the Golden era of Hindi movie music what it was, viz a memorable era for music lovers.

Before the advent of television and internet, Radio Ceylon (later Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) and Vividh Bharati were the main sources of listening to Hindi film songs. In respect of old Hindi film songs, it was observed that while Radio Ceylon specialised in broadcasting film songs of 40s and 50s, Vividh Bharati’s broadcast was more pronounced towards the songs of late 50s and 60s. Accordingly, during those days of radio, I had categorised songs into ‘Radio Ceylon’ songs and ‘Vividh Bharati’ songs depending upon where these songs were heard the most. 😀

“Shahnaaz” (1948) is by now an obscure and forgotten movie. Little is known about this movie today.This movie was a Wahab Production movie and it was directed by S Hassan. The star cast of the movie included names like Nihar, Begum Para, Sheikh, Shanta Patel, Shyama, Gulzar, Altaf etc.

There are some Hindi film songs, especially of early 50s, which have been in my memory bank since childhood and those includes the songs from “Hum Log” (1951). Two songs of this film viz. Chali jaa chali jaa chali jaa and Chhun chhun chhun baaje paayal (Ham Log) were very popular when the film was released. Those days, these songs were quite often played over loudspeakers in my neighbourhood.
