On a clear night, one can see a million stars in the sky. While there are the bright and shining stars that will readily draw the viewer’s gaze, the sky is full of more distant dots of light that twinkle with a dimmer light. As the gaze traverses across the boundless skies, one realizes that the sky is so full with dimmer stars that are content to shine with lesser light. For every bright and luminous star, there are a score of dimmer stars that dot the tapestry of heavens, completing the intricate design of the skies. Without these less luminous partners, the sky would look barren, as it does on the nights when there is smog in the air. The viewer’s gaze can then make out just a handful of the more luminous stars, while the spread of the sky is simply an austere shade of grey, bare and lonely.

Today’s song is from film Nazrana-40s. It is sung by Shamshad Begum and Chitalkar, under the baton of my favourite composer C.Ramchandra. C Ramchandra started his career with a C grade stunt film ‘ Sukhi Jeevan ‘-1942. By the time he was a known name, Shamshad Begum had already become famous all over India with her songs from Khazanchi and other films. C Ramchandra used Shamshad’s voice for the first time when he sang a duet with her in his first Filmistan film ‘Safar ‘-46.

It is a long time – a ten years wait for registering a hit. Maybe not a surprise in an industry that is known for fixing awards, and manipulating careers. His first songs appeared in 1949. Confined to B/C grade films for a large part of his career, Farooque Kaiser had to wait till 1958 before he could lay his claim to fame based on a song that would be recognized as a popular hit with the listening public.
