OK, so there are many a piano songs in Hindi films, and we have seen many an actor play the piano on screen. In this song, I see Pran playing the piano. This is the first time I have seen this happen on screen. Other friends and readers may comment on this, but for me, this is the first time.
The film is ‘Pehli Jhalak’ from 1954. Kishore Kumar and Vijyantimala are the lead actors in this Hindi remake. The film is produced under the banner of Jagat Pictures productions, and is directed by MV Raman. Besides the lead pair and Pran, the cast of actors includes Dara Singh, Shammi, Roopa Verma, Jawahar Kaul, Shivraj, Kamlakant, Om Prakash etc. Our dear Arun ji Deshmukh has provided a synopsis of this film in his article on another song from this film “Achhi Soorat Hui Ya Museebat“, just about ten days ago.
In its time, this film was music blockbuster, with as many as ten songs. One of the songs “Zameen Chal Rahi Aasmaan Chal Raha Hai” in the voice of Hemant Kumar, is a two part song. The creator pair of all the songs in this film is Rajinder Krishan weilding the pen and the C Ramchandra on the music direction. All the songs of this film are very listen-able.
On screen, the song is performed by Vijayantimala. Pran is also present in the frame. Apparently, there is something in the coat pocket of Pran that Vijayantimala is trying to pilfer, and she is singing this song to distract his attention from her intentions. The song starts with her sitting at the piano and singing. After one ‘antaraa’, she makes Pran sit down and play the piano, while she tries to ruffle through the pockets of Pran’s coat lying on the couch. He is facing away, but every so often he turns around to look at her, and she has to stop the searching task, and show as if she is just enjoying the singing. Interesting situation – when the song started, I was wondering why is she singing for Pran. But as the song progresses, I realize she is just playing a ruse.
