Missing Films of 1960s – 19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We are now getting close to the end of 1962. The next film from that year which is being introduced today is ‘Sher Khan’. The film and its songs are available on the internet, and have been for some time now. Apparently,  we just did not get around to bringing up here, the songs from this film. Probably it is the obscurity of the film and its title, and the level of unfamiliarity that the team may have with this film and its songs. With music by SN Tripathi, the songs of this film are very good. Once we get to hear them, then the mind wonders – where have these been hiding so far. But anyway, we are getting to them now, and that is a good thing.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 15
———————————————————

During the British rule in India, film censorship was introduced under Indian Cinematography Act, 1918 under which the films could be exhibited only after getting certification from the Censor Boards. During the height of freedom struggles, film censorship was used as a tool to discourage political and socio-economic issues which were perceived to be anti-British rule in India. In the talkie era, ‘Mill’ (Mazdoor, 1934) was probably the first Indian film to be banned for exhibition by the Censor Board after the film was released. The story and script written by Munshi Premchand dealt with the exploitation of labourers by a Mill owner. The film was considered to contain inflammatory undertones creating a rift betwen the labourers and owners in factories.

🙂 🙂

Welcome all to our next century milestone, piling nine hundred on top of eleven thousand. And we are now just 100 short of the next thousandth milestone. And we hope to get there shortly now. This milestone has been quite slow to arrive. We have taken full forty days from the previous century, which occurred on 24th Jan.

एक दोस्त मिला आज, बहुत सारे सालों के बाद।

Yes, years and years have passed since we last met. And today, while searching for someone else, I located the one I had probably met once or maybe twice, and then never met again for decades. But the memories of that earlier meeting are so very sharp and very clear. And the lilt of its sound still rings in the backdrop of the mind, very often.

This song is from Master Bhagwan’s film ‘Damaad’ (1951). In the decade of 1940’s, Bhagwan had specialised in low budget C grade action and stunt films. Usually his films would be completed in Rs. 60 to 70 thousand rupees only. He used to churn out films after films with the same set of actors with almost the same story in all his films. The audience of Master Bhagwan’s films came to the theatre to see his antics and comedy, coupled with action scenes of fighting and incredible stunts.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 13

‘घ’
“घर से तो कट चुका पत्ता”

As I search for songs of Rafi Sb, I continue to find unheard and obscure gems, that make one wonder – where have these songs been hiding so far. And more importantly, continue to marvel more and more at the versatility of Rafi Sb’s voice and the depth of his emotional connect with the intent of the song. When I picked out this song and heard it, the one word that flashed in my mind was ‘free spirit’. This song is meant to be a freewheeling song of a wanderer, who has no roots. As the song progresses, the mind catches the attention of the feeling of lightness one experiences, as the sounds of Rafi Sb’s voice sink into the mind. The sound is coming almost as if from the skies, light as the wind. It carries a plucky feeling of a carefree heart that is joyous in its rootlessness. I am so enchanted by the emotional expression in this song that today I actually went ahead and created a new category – ‘Free Spirit Song’.

‘ग’
“गरज़ हो तो नखरे दिखाती है बीवी”

The voice of Rafi Sb has played in the back for umpteen actors, all the way from mid 1940s the 1980s. But there are two actors who screen performances have a very special connection with Rafi Sb. Not difficult to guess, I am sure. Yes, Shammi Kapoor is one, and Johnny Walker is the second.

Talking about qawwaalis, I remember, in my childhood there used to be programs of Qawwali muqabla (competition) and mushairas, and in ‘quawwali muqablas’ the names that easily come to mind is the name of Shakila Bano Bhopali, Jaani Baabu Qawwaal and Aziz Nazaan.

Genius of Jaidev – 44
——————————-

Some of the songs mentioned in HFGK for film ‘Do Boond Paani’ (1971) as separate songs, but have been combined in ASAD. Also, I could not find audio or video of the remaining two songs. So I go to the next Film ‘Ek Thi Reeta’, also from 1971.
