In the beginning years of this millennium, we among the last dwellers of last millennium, were kept mesmerized with old Hindi film songs. This was a willing intoxication, which made it possible to deal all difficulties, happiness, sadness, tragedies etc. that life chose to throw at us. Often the songs that played randomly in a collection of songs playing on computer would become a subject of discussion. Once, a close friend said she like this song by Mohammed Rafi Sb a lot:
baa-hosh-o-hawaas mein deewaanaa
ye aaj waseeyat kartaa hoon
ye dil ye jaan mile tumko
main tumse muhabbat kartaa hoon
This song from the film ‘Night In London’ (1967) is posted here.
Another colleague/friend once spoke of this song from ‘Aaye Din Bahaar Ke’ (1966) – “Mere Dushman Tu Meri Dosti Ko Tarse“. Now this song is very interesting in its lyrics/poetry which is actually cursing the beloved. Total and full of ‘bad-duaa’ ie ill wishing – it is to be seen to be believed, what all the poet is wishing on his beloved friend.
mujhe gham dene waale tu khushi ko tarse
tu phool bane patjhad kaa, tujh pe bahaar na aaye kabhi
meri hi tarah tu tadpe tujhko qaraar na aaye kabhi
jiye tu is tarah ke zindagi ko tarse
itnaa to asar kar jaayen meri wafaayen o bewafaa
ik roz tujhe yaad aayen apni jafaayen o bewafaa
is duniyaa mein koyi teraa apnaa to kyaa, begaanaa na ho
kisi kaa pyaar kyaa tu berukhi ko tarse
Just falling short of wishing death! ‘jiye tu iss tarah ke zindagi ko tarse’. There are numerous songs of this situation in Hindi films, too many to count actually. In the 60’s it can be said, that every other film had this situation song, where the hero or the heroine is wronged, and singing a song lamenting the bewafaai of the beloved. But I have looked all over the blog and I could not find any other song so full of curses. And this is also the only song on the blog, which is tagged as ‘hate song’ category. The song still sounds so believable and not odd at all. All the credit to the team of composers, lyricist and the singer. For this would easily have gone wrong.
There are some more songs, which have somewhat similar emotions and ill-wishes expressed in different forms. I made a list of songs with those varied expressions.

Here is a list of some of my all-time favourite songs by Rafi sahab in the similar situations:
Patthar Ke Sanam Tujhe Hum Ne Mohabbat Ka Khuda Jaana – ‘Patthar Ke Sanam’ (1967)
Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein Tujhko Bitha Kar – ‘Brahmchari’ (1968)
Aaj Ki Raat Mere Dil Ki Salaami Le Le – ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ (1967)
Dil Jo Na Keh Saka – ‘Bheegi Raat’ (1965)
Teri Zulfon Se Judaai To Nahin Maangi Thi – ‘Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai’ (1961)
Rang Aur Noor Ki Baraat Kise Pesh Karun – ‘Ghazal’ (1964)
There are more similar/different songs created for Hindi films for such situations, where dejected lovers either drown in self-pity or end up giving ‘bad-dua’ in a smaller/kinder way, to the beloved. But most songs of this genre are praying for the happiness of the beloved, who has deceived them, has indulged in ‘bewafaai’ for want of similar expressive word in the English language. An excellent case in point is this pensive Lata song – “Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Ye“, filmed on Meena Kumari in ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraai’ (1960). Shankar-Jaikishan and Shailendra created this classic song with just the right touch of melancholy and congratulatory mood. With a dose of resignation.
Most songs in this genre, also turn out to be popular, be it the pensive songs of Mukesh, Lata, Suraiyya, Talat Mehmood or Mohammed Rafi. So the well known songs are all posted. Looking for the theme, I ended up with “Tu Pyaar Hai Kisi Aur Ka” song in ‘Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin’ (1991) by Kumar Sanu. Quite a decent composition with innovative lyrics, that one.
I was sure all well-known Rafi songs in this genre are posted. But as luck would have it, I found the link of this Rafi solo in one of my saved files, which I was just randomly checking. This is a well-known song from the film ‘Dhadkan’ (1972). Composer is Ravi who also wrote this song with Ali Jalili. Ali Jalili is an unknown poet for the blog, as this is the first song by him to be posted. Avinash ji is doing a series of 70’s decade missing movies, so he may be able to find some other films where Ali Jalili has written lyrics. Ali Jalili has written one more song in the same film with Ravi, “Tumse Nazar Mili”, which was also used for advertisement of different products. My guess is he must be someone connected with advertising jingles, more so as he has collaborated with Ravi, not a regular poet for writing the two songs in this film.
The song is filmed as a wedding reception song, where Sanjay Khan is singing this song for congratulating the bride Mumtaz and groom Roopesh Kumar. The real feelings of Sanjay Khan are evident, but he is trying to disguise them and give blessings to the couple.
Two songs of the film are already posted in the blog, so this is the 3rd song.
Jab Toone Kuchh Na Kiya
Main To Chala Jidhar Chale Rasta
I have done posts of some songs of the late 70’s and early 80’s, but very few songs of early 70’s. This song has a very deeply meaningful and emotional core, as we expect from Ravi’s compositions usually. There is the Punjabi dholak music in the background which carries the rhythm of the song. And Rafi Sb’s singing is again out of this world. For me this is a known song, as it used to be played regularly on radio. Again, when one really listens to it with a critical ear, with the aim of judging its merit with other such type of songs, a few are listed above, it is revealed as a fabulous song on all counts. More fabulous for being a 70’s song. By now Ravi is a seasoned and senior composer, with huge successes behind him and much more experience of how to get the best out of Rafi. And Rafi Sb has delivered spectacularly in this song, the only one in the film. Subtle changes in the way some words are sung in every repeated line, and those are again different for every time he sings the mukhda. I refuse to believe that anyone else could do so much variation in a single voice, same rhythm and level, two stanza song, in live recording.
The pauses in the lines and words of a line, and starting the next word at the same level as before the pause, what superb control in the vocals. I am not a technical person, in the matter of singing, but if anyone can explain this phenomenon to me, I will be thankful to them. It sounds as a modern-day recording done bit by bit, line by line, and mixed afterwards. Practice makes things perfect and well-rehearsed is the forte of Rafi Sb. But the question is how well rehearsed and how much perfect. I can just conclude that the farishta in the guise of a singer is giving the same dedicated 200 % to a song composed for a new actor of 70’s, as he gave to all his songs, repeated in live shows, which won him accolades and a place is history.

7th March’2022 was the tenth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ of music director Ravi (3 March 1926 – 7 March 2012).
Ravi has given us many memorable, iconic, and immortal songs Hindi movies which will be listened as long as HFM is discussed on this planet-earth. Among the many successful associations Ravi had the most talked about is his association with lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi.
Sahir Ludhianvi was born on 8th March 1921 (08.03.1921 – 25.10.1980) and today is his 101st birth anniversary.

While almost all songs of their collaboration have been posted on the blog, we have one song left from ‘Gumraah-1963’ and three songs from the movie ‘Chingaari-1989’.
As a tribute to both Sahir Ludhianvi and music director Ravi I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Chingaari-1989’.
“Chingaari” (from 1970s) released in 1989’ was directed by Ram Maheshwary for ‘Kalpanalok, Bombay’.
It was produced by Pannalal Maheshwary.
(The same production house and directorial team who had given us movies like ‘Kaajal’, ‘Neelkamal’ etc.)
It had Sanjay, Leena Chandavarkar, Pran, Shatrughan Sinha, Rehman, Padma Khanna, Ramesh Deo, Durga Khote, Jagirdar, David and Junior Mehmood.
They were supported by Tiwari, Anjali Kadam, Jairaj, Jankidas, and Guest Artiste Suresh.
Leela Mishra, Jagdish Raj, Savita, Rajrani, Baby Rubena, Madhu Mehta, Shinde, Sophia also included the supporting cast in this movie.
Story Idea of this movie was by Gulshan Nanda, and screenplay was written by Benoy Chatterjee.
Dialogues of this movie were written by Rajinder Singh Bedi. Editing of this movie was done by D.N. Pai.
This movie had seven songs written by Sahir Ludhianvi and music was composed by music director Ravi.
Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey and Usha Mangeshkar (as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980)) had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
Here is the list of songs this movie had (I am including this as the previous song posts of this movie doesn’t mention these details).

*(multiple version song)
Out of the seven songs in this movie four songs (one multiple version song) have been posted on the blog earlier.
Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mahendra Kapoor and on screen it is lip synced by Leena Chandavarkar and Sanjay respectively. This song may sound a very simple song to listen, however it has very meaningful lyrics in the context of the movie. The heroine of the movie Leena Chandavarkar has fallen in love with Police Inspector Sanjay. However, she has a troubled past and that is why the apprehensions in her mind whether the man will accept her with her past?
But as expected in Sahir’s poetry the firm assurance comes from the hero when he says that ‘Tum jo bhi ho meri ho, Ab aur naa kuchh socho’…
(In the movie this song is a dream sequence of Leena Chandavarkar).
Let us now listen to this beautiful song …
The audio version contains three stanza with the second male stanza which is missing from the video link available …

Missing Films of 1960s – 99
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
OK wow, we are at 99 for this series today. 🙂
The surprising thing is that this film is not yet on the blog. It is not obscure, it is not unfamiliar, it is not starring unfamiliar faces, it does not contain unfamiliar or unheard songs, and the songs are good to be heard. So then, how come?
Well, we come to it today. The film we are bringing on today is ‘Shart’ from 1969. Of course, its namesake from 1954 has legendary music and songs. The 1969 ‘Shart’ does not compare to the quality of music of the earlier one. But still, given the era we were in during late 1960s, we are still talking of primary rated artists who came together for this song. In their own right, these artists had already established themselves in the industry.
Music is by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. The lyrics are written by Anand Bakshi. And the singer of this song is Asha Bhosle. The lead pair in this film is Mumtaz and Sanjay (later known by the name Sanjay Khan). By 1969, both had made their presence felt on the box office. Mumtaz, having struggled thru from being a junior artist and then playing many a C grade films, had by this time graduated to A and B class cinema. Sanjay, being the younger brother of Feroze Khan already had a head start – appearing in big banner films opposite to top line leading ladies already.
The film was produced under the banner of Shankar Movies, Bombay, and was directed by Kewal Mishra. The star cast of this film, in addition to the lead pair mentioned above, is listed as Kumud Chhugani, Rajendra Nath, KN Singh, Ramesh Dev, Rajan Haksar, Heeralal, Shammi, Meena Rai, Murad, Ravikant, Tuntun, Ravi Khanna, and Hercules.
I do not readily recall the storyline. The song is group dance song, with Mumtaz as the lead dancer and a group of sahelis supporting her. We catch a glimpse of Ramesh Deo in the beginning of the clip. And Sanjay is seen watching this dance performance. The peculiar thing about this song is that in between we see that the lead dancer is switched, and we see another lady leading the dance, wearing exactly the same attire as Mumtaz. I request our circle of knowledgeable readers to please help identify this other lady.
It seems that the leading man, Sanjay, is equally perplexed. There is a look of baffled curiosity on his face, as he tries to figure out how the lady is being switched, as the song progresses. From a distance, it cannot be clearly made out, but in closer shots, there definitely is a switching of lead performer happening. Again, request is for those who may have seen this film, to please add information to explain this situation.
The song itself is a lovely Asha rendition, and the performance by Mumtaz is simply too good. Very energetic and very involved with the scene, she is of course the star attraction in this clip.
And after this post – we have the century post of this series coming up. Watch this space for more. 🙂 🙂

re chupke se maine bhi kiya ishaara
re kali kali jaan gayi
gali gali mach gaya sho..or
kali kali jaan gayi
oy gali gali mach gaya shor
main kya jaanoon
chhup ke sakhiyaan
sunti hain mere prem ki batiyaan
ae suno
ae dekho
o logo
main kya jaanoon
karte hain batiyaan
padh ke log mere naam ki patiyaan
dheere dheere baaten huin
chori mulaqaaten huin
kali kali jaan gayi
gali gali mach gaya shor
chori se sainyyaan ne mohe pukaara
re chupke se maine bhi kiya ishaara
re kali kali jaan gayi
gali gali mach gaya shor
kali kali jaan gayi
gali gali mach gaya sho..or
kali kali jaan gayi
gali gali mach gaya sho..or

‘Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ (1971) is different from the serial ‘Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ which came a long time after the movie. The movie was an all-round entertainer. We would not get anything less in a movie where Om Prakash heads the cast and the hero (Sanjay Khan in this case) plays a second fiddle to Om Prakash and Jagdeep. Plus, when the mirch-masalas Lalita Pawar and Shashikala spice up the whole setup, it is but natural that the lead cast (Sanjay Khan and Leena Chandavarkar) become secondary – their presence being needed for the romantic interludes.
I must confess I was unaware of this movie till a few years back – till 2014 to be exact. I chanced upon it on one of the umpteen satellite channels. The title made me sit through what turned out to be an enjoyable family- entertainer (as they used to be called back then) which didn’t make you start crying halfway through. A family-entertainer essentially was one which one could see with the entire family and the viewer will be preached about how to maintain family relationships and a few ladies in the audience will be seen crying into their hankies. This movie was not like that.
So, coming to today’s song we have Om Prakash playing a Sadhu Baba and Sanjay and Jagdeep are his chelaas (I think it means students) with Sunder playing an assistant. In the movie Sanjay is Om Prakash’s son, Sunder – his servant and Jagdeep is Sanjay’s saala (brother-in-law). The song has Shashikala and Lalitha Pawar as ladies who have come with queries to the “antaryaami baba”. Through the song we get a gist of the movie. The song is in the voice of Manna Dey written by Rajendra Krishan, with music composed by RD Burman.
One song from this movie was discussed in 2016 by our Avinashji. On the occasion of Om Prakash’s passing away anniversary today; we shall see him the way he was largely-loved by the public. It is 20 years since he passed away.
In those days we used to live in Chembur, Bombay (not yet Mumbai then) and both Om Prakash and Ashok Kumar lived not very far from where we were. Those were the days when it was still cable TV and not satellite TV. And what did the cable operator providing service to our apartment do, he just stopped service for the day and put up a notice on black card— to enable the public in the area to attend the funeral of our beloved “jija ji” (as Om Prakash’s character was in “’Chupke Chupke”) we are suspending our service for a day. That was how much he was loved.
We can remember so many of his memorable characters – starting from ‘Guddi’ (1971) (that is where I noticed him first) to all his characters in Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies, to ‘Ghar Ho To Aisa’ (1990) (that is the last time I saw him in a movie). Of course, his career spanned 42 years and starting from movies made in Lahore in 1942 to “Ghar Ki Izzat” in 1994 he was a co star to every actor – big or small- and gave his best no matter the size of the role as in ‘Purab Aur Paschim’ (1970).
Thinking of Jija ji today on his anniversary

Song – Suno Re Saadho Ye Sansaaram Ultam Paltam Ho Gaya (Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) (1970) Singer – Manna Dey, Lyrics – Rajendra Krishan, MD – RD Burman
Chorus
Lyrics
baaba-leeka
hey..ey
suno re saadho ye sansaaram
ultam paltam ho gaya
kahaan ki bhakti
pooja paatham
thokam thaakam ho gaya
bam bam leharey bam bam
bam bam leharey bam bam
suno re saadho ye sansaaram
ultam paltam ho gaya
kahaan ki bhakti
pooja paatham
thokam thaakam ho gaya
bam bam leharey bam bam
bam bam leharey bam bam
dekho re dekho
dekho re saadho
kalyug ki naari ka namoona
apni hi santaan ko is ne
kas ke lagaaya kaisa choona
apni bahu ko bete se apne
sau gaj door sulaya
prabhu kripa se
phir bhi is ne
chaand sa pota paaya
bolo
bam bam leharey bam bam
phir se
bam bam leharey bam bam
dhanya hai saadho
ye devi bhi
chidiya jaisi bholi bhali
rang birange pankh hai iske
chonch magar hai kaali kaali
apni boodhi saas ko is ne
ghar se maar bhagaaya
jab ye saas bani to is ko
bahu ne mazaa chakhaya
ho bolo
bam bam leharey bam bam
phir se
bam bam leharey bam bam
hey..ey
suno re saadho ye sansaaram
ultam paltam ho gaya
kahaan ki bhakti
pooja paatham
thokam thaakam ho gaya
ho bolo
bam bam leharey bam bam
bolo
bam bam leharey bam bam
bam bam bam
babam bam babam
bam bam bam
babam bam babam
bam bam bam
babam bam babam
bam bam bam
babam bam babam
bam bam bam

kya kahoon
kuchh kahaa nahin jaaye. . .
Really so – our utterances and our thoughts well nigh come to a helpless pause. The more I want to substantiate these thoughts, the more difficult I find to avoid repeating myself. And yet, the voice of Rafi Sb, the limitless nuances of emotions it carries, the multitude of expressions carried in thousands of songs – that voice, that divinity descended from the heavens, continues to perpetuate afresh, with every song that is played. There seems no end to this variety.

Atul ji’s 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 13

That is the image that forms in the mind. A distant, unfamiliar scenario. A solitary person trudging along a dusty road that leads through farms and fields, passing through towns big and small.
There is a purpose in the pace. There is a steadiness in the tread. There seems to be an unhurried and patient urgency in the forward movement.
Is he searching for someone, for something? Is he expecting a certain destination? I don’t know. The landmarks, they come and go, the milestones pass by. But he appears not to halt anywhere, never seems to take rest. Just a pause at a milestone, sees it with a searching eye, takes another breath, and then presses on.
He seems to be carrying something, slung on the shoulders. Is that an instrument of music? Or is it something else? What is it, I am not able to make out.
