“Dillagi”(1978) was Produced by Kanwar Ajit Singh andBikram Singh Dehal and directed by Basu Chatterjee for BikramJeet Films International, Bombay. This movie had Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Mithu Mukherjee, Devan Verma, Asrani, Urmeela Bhatt, Ritu Kamal, Preeti Ganguly, Kajri, Anjali Paigankar, Manjita,Poornima Jairam, Dulari, Lalita Kumari, Rajan Kapoor,Shobhana Shah,Geetanjali,Manik Chowdhury,Guffi Paintal, Qamar Khan, Bina Bawa etc in it with Friendly appearance by Keshto Mukherjee and Brahmachari and unfriendly Special appearance by Shatrughan Sinha. 🙂

It was described as a “social” movie but it was a romantic comedy bordering on soft erotica. That is what I felt about this movie when I watched it in 1978 (duly bunking my college 🙂 ).

I was perhaps a bit too young and immature for a movie with this story line at that time. With the benefit of hindsight, now I feel that it is a nice movie to be watched with one’s lover/ spouse, rather than a movie to be watched with one’s siblings/ parents etc.

The movie had four songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details of these songs :-

Main kaun sa geet sunaaun 8137 27-may-13
Kar gayee mast mujhe phaagun ki hawaa 9584 17-Mar-14
Baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye 14234 4-Apr-18

With time, the movie, and moreso its songs have ended up becoming obscure.

The fourth and final song, the song under discussion is perhaps the most obscure out of the four songs of the movie. This song is sung by Lata and Nitin Mukesh. Yogesh is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song is picturised as a romantic stage performance song on Hema Malini and Dharmendra dressed like Shakuntala and Dushyanta, immortalised by Kalidas in his Sanskrit epic “Abhigyan Shakuntala”. Lyrics by Yogesh are in pure Sanskritised Hindi, as befitting the genre, and they sound quite appropriate for the picturisation.

Mithu Mukherjee, Preeti Ganguly, Poornima Jairam etc are also visible in the picturisation as backstage support persons. 🙂

Lyrics of this song as well as other details were provided by Prakashchandra, who informed me that the audio version of the song is longer than the video version.

With this song, “Dillagi”(1978) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Atulji
I just saw there is a part 2 to the holi song. This has to be updated on the blog. Even Avinashji had mentioned it in a comment when that song was posted.

When the song starts the shakuntala`s role was played by MIthu Mukherjee and afterwards Dharmendra hallucinates the song/dance with Hema Malini instead of Mithu Mukherjee.
In the movie, Dharmendra(playing the role of Sanskrit Lecturer was besotted with “Touch me not” kind of Chemistry Lecturer Hema Malini)

That touch-me-not attitude is wat the girls in the hostel sing in the part two of the holi song which has a line “Jijaji ko jiji ne dhoka diya” etc etc.
The hostel girls call the chemistry teacher/ warden jiji.

Madam ji
That part of the song lyrics along with the lyrics of whole song (i.e., in 3 parts I have sent to Atul ji long back , which are pending to be posted:
P.S:
1)ranrejwa too rang aissi chunri hamar( :Kishore kumar,Suman kalyanpur & Chorus) &
2)Kar gayee Mast mujhe(Kishore Kumar, Suman kalyanpur & chorus)
3)Jeejaji ko jeeji ne dhokha diyaa(female chours)
All above 3 song pieces are parts of the same song.
