We remember Nightingale of Punjab on her remembrance day today.
Surinder Kaur (25 November 1929 – 14 June 2006) was the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri in 2006. She was the recipient of numerous other awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and also a doctorate degree by Guru Nanak Dev University. Much of her life details can be easily found on her wiki page and many other articles and interviews on the net.
Her popularity of course stems from the fact that she pioneered and popularised folk songs of Punjab to the rest of the world. However, readers are well aware that she had a very short but memorable stint in HFM in the late forties. She gave playback to 57 songs in 21 films during the golden era and many of her songs are remembered and played to this day.

I became aware about the stories built around the fictional character of Byomkesh Bakshi, the murder mystery solver when a TV serial based on these stories was telecast on the Doordarhsan’s National channel in early 1990s. The serial was directed by Basu Chatterjee with Rajit Kapoor playing the role of Byomkesh Bakshi and KK Raina as Ajit, his assistant. During those days, the character of Byomkesh Bakshi became known all over India. ‘Byomkesh’ became synonymous with persons having inquisitive nature.

Today (13 july 2020) is the birth anniversary of Prem Dhawan (13 june 1923-7 May 2001) Prem Dhawan is mainly known as a lyricist, but he was also a music director as well as an actor and choreographer.
Prem Dhawan made his debut as a lyricist in 1946 with the movie “Dharti Ke Lal”(1946). His last movie as a lyricist was was “Appu Raja”(1989).

“Kaajal”(1965) was a movie that I knew little about when I was growing up. I watched this movie in 1978 when my went to college and my movie watching spree began with a vengeance. Those days, I only liked “new” movies and songs and scoffed at “old” movies and songs. But I had heard about old movies, so I would go and watch them when no “new” movie was there for me to watch. The old movies tended to run to empty house and so buying tickets for these movies was not a problem. I wondered if a day will come in future when one would be able to watch “new” movies with the same ease, without needing to queue up and black marketeers having a field day. Believe it or not, today we are actually in that situation where one can buy tickets of even brand new movies without needing to form a queue in the movie hall.

Today’s song is from the film “Uljhan” (1942). This was the first of the three same title films. The second came in 1975 and the third was in year 2000. This was the second film by Acharya Art Productions, floated by director N R Acharya. This was after he left Bombay Talkies, to chart out his own path, without either following the splinter group led by S Mukherjee or remaining with the rest of Bombay Talkies staff.

So far I have discussed three of the six feature films which Sai Paranjpye has directed in her filmy career – ‘Sparsh’ (1980) in “Geeton Ki Duniya Mein Sargam Hain Hum“, ‘Chashm-e-Baddoor’ (1981) in “Is Nadi Ko Mera Aaina Maan Lo” and ‘Saaz’ (1997) in “Baa. . .dal Ghumadh Badh Aaye“. In this article, I take up one more film by her – ‘Disha’ (1990) which, is not well known to the public at large. Sai Paranjpye accords this film as her best feature film in terms of excellence in all the main departments of the film making – story, screen-play, dialogues, direction, and the acting contributions from all the actors associated with this film.

This is one of the songs of which made an impact at the time of watching the film. I had seen this film ‘Phir bhi dil hai Hindustani’ in theatre. This was before the multiplexes, so there were only the theatres, where the folks went to see the movie.
Now in multiplexes which are always above malls, there is the added temptation of shopping. This must be the reason, my husband is so reluctant to go to watch a movie. Over the last few years, I have also lost all interest in watching movies, altogether. As a weekend approaches, I am thinking I want to see this film or that film. Some of those I have seen earlier or some which I have never seen. But the weekend comes and goes, without my attempting to watch them. There must be lot of reasons for this lack of motivation.
