It is a song that I call as a “Tonga” song, and for good reasons. The music of O P Nayyar very much reminds one of a horse hoofing along merrily drawing the tonga along. And the picturisation actually shows a tonga with Kishore Kumar and Chand Usmani as its passengers.

Hum matwaale naujawan

I have read a lot about this song called “Hum matwaale naujawaan”. I was not much aware of this song. In fact, there is another song with similar lyrics sung by Rafi and Mukesh from a 1961 movie which itself is called “Hum matwaale naujawan”. But this song “hum matwaale naujawaan” is from an earlier movie called “Shararat” and is sung by Kishore Kumar.

Kishore Kumar has sung some wonderful comedy songs in his career. One of the first such songs, that won widespread public approval was in “Dilli ka thug”. In this movie, Kishore Kumar sang songs of different moods.

In 1950s, there were a few movies, (now forgotten) that had Delhi (Dilli) in the title of the movie. These movies tended to have Kishore Kumar in the lead role. For example, Kishore Kumar acted in “Nai Dilli” (1957) as well as “Dilli ka thug” (1959).

Considering that it is Shailendra who wrote the lyrics and Shankar Jaikishan who composed the music, it could as well be Mukesh singing for Raj Kapoor, but here it is Kishore Kumar singing for himself in “Rangoli”.

The movie ” Miss Mary” is a valuable gem that has been forgotten with the passage of time. I cannot believe that this movie is now 51 years old ! It means that almost everyone associated with this movie is no longer with us.
