In Hindi movies, a female character singing a bhajan in front of the idol of a God used to be a standard scene from 1950s to 1970s. I have always wondered who pioneered this genre of songs. Now I believe that I have got my answer. Having watched a few such songs from the earlier days of Hindi movies, I have now come to the conclusion that Amirbai Karnataki could well be the first singer to sing such bhajans as well as the first actress to enact them on screen.

“Shikaari” (1946) is a movie which had Ashok Kumar, Paro, Veera, Ram Shukul, Leela Mishra etc in it. This song was one of the earliest movies of S D Burman as a music director and this movie had some nice songs in it.

“Bharthari” (1944) is a movie that I became aware of when I discovered a wonderful song from this movie and discussed it in this blog. No information of any sort was available on this movie on internet till then. But our in house encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh had exhaustive information about him which he shared with us in his comments to that post.

I was under the impression that lullabies first made their appearance in Hindi movies in 1950s, and that these lullabies have been sung by singers of the golden era (1949-1980). But I just came across a lovely lullaby from the pre golden era.

What an endearing song, and what a mellifluous voice. Such a wonderful gem of a song, from the first film for which Hansraj Behl composed the music. The film is ‘Pujari’ from 1946. This was the debut year for Hansraj Behl, and 3 films containing his compositions were released that year. As per records, this film is he first one for which he started composing.
