It is another of my absolute favorite songs and movies. I actually have a superstition that if I see a Hrishikesh Mukherjee Movie on the morning of an exam or an important day, the day will go well. Golmaal(1979) is a movie that came regularly in the morning 6 am slot in SAB Tv and SET MAX while I was in school and thus went on to be a much by-hearted film. In fact I remember when my cousins were 2 yrs old and I called my aunt one day, she told me that they were watching this movie. I replied that I am extremely proud of her, she is giving them the right education and they will grow up to be like me. She laughingly said that then I will shut the movie right away.

Remembering Mahendra Kapoor today, 9th January, his birth anniversary.

A resounding voice, that brings home the feeling of echoes in the valleys and mountains. A booming voice that is the representative and the choice for the rousing songs of chivalry and patriotism. A voice that is unmatched in the annals of the industry. A voice that has probably the widest vocal range amongst the contemporary singers and is rich in the higher octaves. Likened with the famed Italian tenor, Pavarotti, Mahendra Kapoor was always called upon to render the songs that needed power and exuberance. Listening to his voice gives a strong feeling of mountains and wide open spaces full of sound and melody. His songs are remembered for their inspiring and dominant strength.

4th january is the day when R D Burman left for the heavenly abode at quite a young age of 54. He was easily the most influential music director of my formative age, viz 1970s. R D Burman as the music director, Kishor Kumar as the male playback singer and Rajesh Khanna as the male superstar arrived at the scene almost simultaneously and they all left their indelible mark of Hindi movie industry.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee had watched a Japanese movie, which depicts a man who has only a few days to live but instead of being melancholic, he lives his life cheerfully and spreads happiness all around him. Hrishikesh Mukherjee liked that movie so much that he adpated the movie into Hindi and created “Anand” (1970). Not content with that, he re adapted the same adaptation to change the gender of the main character and he thus came up with “Mili” (1975). Both these movies were critically well acclaimed and well received by the ordinary movie watchers as well.

The general memory of the 1969 movie, Saat Hindustaani, is linked to the fact that it was the debut movie for Amitabh Bachhan. However, in my mind, this movie is more associated with the writer director Khwaja Ahmed Abbas or KA Abbas. The Wikipeadia page on Abbas Saab contains very interesting information about this personality, e.g. fact like his family tree is traced back to Ayub Ansari, a close associate of Prophet Mohammed, and that his grandfather was one of the prominent soldiers in the 1857 uprising against the Britishers and a martyr, sentenced to be blown on a cannon, and that Abbas Saab is the great great great grandfather of Shahid Kapoor. Besides these familial facts, Abbas Saab has been a prolific writer and journalist, and a noted story writer and film maker in Hindi Cinema. His column ‘Last Page’ in ‘Blitz’, the Bombay based newspaper, ran from 1935 to 1987, the longest running column in the history of Indian journalism. He wrote 73 books in Hindi, Urdu and English, and is considered as one of the premier Urdu short story writers of the 20th century.

We often read about real life following reel life and vice versa. I am not talking about movie actors playing roles based on some other real life people. I am talking of the actors playing their own real life stories on the silver screen. There have been quite a few cases where actors enacted their own real life stories in movies.
