Here is another gem of a duet from the film Apna Haath Jagannath (1960). Three song from this movie are already discussed in these pages. This one is a fun filled duet by Kishore and Asha Bhosle. I had seen this song many years ago on Doordarshan in the Chitrahaar program. The words and the music was all lost from memory, just the visual of Kishore Kumar walking, and being followed by a lady in a car remained in the mind. Recently, browsing through YouTube, I chanced to see this visual as the thumbnail image, and lo, I found this lost friend once again.

The movie Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) is one of the classic movies of the great producer director Guru Dutt. This is a remarkable watershed movie, about the business of making movies. Guru Dutt plays the role of a director in the film world. The storyline is a very poignant and touching portrayal of his life as he passes through the phases of success and failure, both in the personal and professional domains. In many ways, this movie is an autobiographical essay by Guru Dutt about his own life and its tribulations, down to his supposed attraction for Waheeda Rehman, and how it disturbed his personal family life with Geeta Dutt.

Prima facie, this duet song has similar initial words as the “Dilli Ka Thug” (1958) song (ye raaten ye mausam nadi ka kinaara ), but the two songs are entirely different songs even though they share the same lyricist, music director and the female singer.

Though I have seen “Yakeen” (1969) in a movie hall, I do not remember most of its details except a couple of songs that I have already discussed in this blog. I in fact do not even remember the other songs from this movie.

In Hindi movies, any situation is good enough situation for bursting into a song. I have seen actors singing a song while on a death bed, or while they are fighting. They sing when sad, and they also sing when they are happy. Social occasions means lots of songs. They in fact also sing when they are travelling, be it by a bullock cart, chariot, tonga, rickshaw, bicycle, car or train.
