I am fond of saying that Bollywood movies have one great “Chitthi” (letter) song every decade, beginning from 1960s. Thus we had Likhe jo khat tujhe(Kanyadaan)(1968) in 1960s, Daakiya daak laaya(Palkon ki chhaon mein)(1977) (Palkon Ki Chhaaon Mein” in 1970s, “Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai” (Naam) in 1980s and Sandese aate hain(Border)(1997) (Border) in 1990s. All these songs are already posted in this blog.

“Chitthi” songs, viz songs where one feels nostalgic about one’s loved ones and waits for “chitthi” from them makes for some of the best and most memorable songs. I have posted one such song from 1970s viz. ” daakiya daak laaya”.
The song “daakiya daak laaya” from a 1977 movie called “Palkon ki chhaon mein” was quite a popular “chitthi” song, before it was upstaged by another song of this genre. This song ” chitthi aayi hai watan se chitthi aayi hai” from “Naam” (1986) touched the heart strings of the listeners as no chitthi song had ever done before.

Before “Chitthi aayi hai” became the most popular “Chitthi” song, it was this song that was regarded as the last word among “Chitthi” songs. The present generation may not have heard of this song. Even people of my generation may have forgotten it, but I accidentally stumbled upon this song again. Wow, what a song it was ! I am sure people who have heard this song, as well as those who have not, will love to listen to this song.
