I come back after a short break with yet another rare song by Asha Bhosle!! “Jo Bhi Toone Dekha Teri” is written by Vijay Anand and composed by R D Burman. It is from a film called “Ghunghroo Ki Aawaaz”(1981) which was produced by Vijay Anand and directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay for Navketan Productions. The movie had Vijay Anand, Rekha, Dr. Shriram Lagoo, Leela Mishra, Dheeraj Kumar, Padma Khanna, Pinchoo Kapoor,Iftekhar, Agha, Kanchan Mattu, Sunder Taneja, Ratnamala, Gurcharan, Harindranath Chattopadhya etc in it.

Hullo Atuldom
A few days back we got the news of the passing away of veteran actress Sandhya, said to be 93 or 94. Some sources give her birth year as 1938 & place of birth as Kochi? Kochi? I saw this video which was posted as tribute to the departed soul. This video as also some news channels give her birth year as 1930 & place of birth as Gujarat. I recall that there is a post by our in-house encyclopaedia that will give us all the details that we need to know. Details like her birth name was Vijaya Deshmukh, actress Vatsala Deshmukh was her sister, & another actress of Marathi films, the (late) Ranjana Deshmukh was her niece.

Today’s song is from a fantasy film Gul E Bakawali-1963.
Most Indians have two common traits. One, they are religious and two, they believe in magic. Therefore most of the children liked the stories in which there was fantasy and magic. Ofcourse, I am talking of older times. These days children’s likings have changed and they like to play with modern gadgets, rather than reading books.
When I was in school, there was great demand from students for books on Vedic stories, fantasy and fairy stories, especially the Arabian Night story books in our school library. Students had to put their names on a waiting list for such books, though the library had multiple copies of such books. Once the books were taken home, other members of the family also read them with great taste and nostalgia.

‘Pakhandee’ (1983) was produced by Robert D’Souza and was directed by Samir Ganguly. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Asha Parekh, Ranjeet, Helen, Jagdeep, Asit Sen, Leela Mishra, Anwar Hussain, Kader Khan, N A Ansari, Dinesh Thakur, Sudhir etc. This was Samir Ganguly’s last film as a director.
Samir Ganguly was born in Lucknow in 1936. His father was working in the railway while his mother was a housewife. He was the youngest of the seven children. After the retirement of his father in 1947, Samir was looked after by his brother-in-law (his sister’s husband) in Jaipur who was financially well-off. After his brother-in-law’s retirement, Samir came to Mumbai in 1953 in search of employment during which he stayed with another brother-in-law, Subodh Mukerji who was the younger brother of Filmistan’s boss, Shashadhar Mukerji.

Today’s song is from an imaginary stunt/costume film Sair E Paristan-1958.
When this film came in theatres, I had first thought that the title was Sair E Pakistan, but then I realised that it was Paristan and not Pakistan ! I wonder even today as to why such types of Stunt/ Costume films had stories or rather cookes up silly stories had almost always a Muslim background ? Maybe because such stories were suitable for a background of Middle East countries only and no one would question their credibility. It is also possible to make the stories look like those from the Arabian Night stories. Anyway, the audience of such films never thought of all these things. All that they wanted was fighting, a few ‘Dil Tod’ dances, flashy dresses, big palaces and more daredevil stunts !

In my last article, I have covered the details of the film ‘Jumbish’ (1986) which was produced and directed by Salahuddin Pervez who also wrote the fictional story, screenplay, dialogues and the lyrics. Surprisingly, he was not connected with film industry in any capacity before he ventured into making the film under discussion. Since Jaidev, the music director of the film was one of my favourites, I heard all the seven songs in the film which were all melodious as expected from him. The songs, especially the ghazal and nazm written by Salahuddin Parvez were poetic with unusual metaphors. With his poetic lyrics, the unusual story of the film and the symbolic dialogues he used, I became curious to know about his background. Checking on him on the internet led me to a PDF of his biography on Sahitya Akademy website following his winning the Sahitya Akademy Award in 1991. I found his biography interesting, a gist of which is given below:
