The saga of Hindi films will never be complete without the discussion of the “formula” that used to be, and continues to be, followed by the production banners. More often than not, once a film became a hit, and brought profits for the producers, generally there used to be a spate of new productions trying to imitate the theme, the storyline, and the main attractive ingredients of that successful film, in an effort to duplicate that success. Over a period of time, such duplications would get refined into a list of specific ingredients that should be part of a film production strategy. O P Nayyar would not employ the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in his compositions, but no one found it ironic that Lata Mangeshkar’s younger sister became the mainstay of O P Nayyar compositions.

In a recent post (“koi aaya lachak uthi kaaya”), I had talked about seeing the film Dastaan (1972) on a flight.
As it turned out, that was not the only film I saw on that flight. It was a long flight so I managed to see another film that I’d been wanting to see for a long time – Leader (1964), starring Dilip Kumar and Vyjanthimala.

“Suhaana Safar” (1970) is an obscure movie despite being a “recent” movie by the standards of this blog :). The movie was produced by R C Kumar and directed by Vijay. Its starcast had Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, David Abraham, Lalita Pawar, K. N. Singh, Om Prakash, Tiwari, Bhagwan, Sunder, Manmohan Krishna, Leela Misra, Randhir, Mukri, Keshto Mukherjee etc in it. Now we know why the movie was obscure despite being a recent movie :).

Life is often likened to a journey in Hindi movie songs. This is one comparison that I find quite appropriate. In fact, many other activities during our lifetimes can also be likened to a journey. For instance, this blog is indeed much like a journey. I have often described it as a musical bandwagon that is going on and on, adding fellow passengers on the way and passing milestones after milestones.

I often get confused between the two similarly named movies of 1960s, viz “Shikaar” and “Shikaari”. The confusion is compounded by the fact that both movies had similar storylines, where the hero would go to a jungle for “shikaar” where he would enounter tribals wearing Red Indian/ African kinds of heargears etc and the daughter of the chief would be the chief female dancer among the tribal dance troupe that would sing and dance at the drop of a spear.
