Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 43
“Aao Yaaron Gao” by Asha Bhosle does not fit under the Kamsune/Ansune song category, but a dear friend and co-contributor Raja Swaminathan jee indicated that these two gems from the movie “Hawas” (1974) were not posted, I took a decision on including both of them (song # 43 & 44) under this category.
‘Hawas’ is directed by Sawan Kumar for Mercury Productions. He was also the producer, storywriter and the lyricist of this movie. The star cast includes Anil Dhawan, Neetu Singh, Bindu, Vidya Sinha, Shiv Kumar, Fariyal, Pradeep Kumar, Randhawa and Mehmood. Supported by Pichoo Kapoor, Ashok Khanna, Randhir, Asit Sen, Shera, Basant, Neelam, Nelu, Sharmilee, Jugnu, and Coca-cola. Rekha and Vinod Mehra made friendly appearance in this movie.

Today’s song is from the ” Kam sune – Unsune ” film Pensioner-1954.
When you say that ‘Colgate is No. 1 Toothpaste’, it does not mean that everyone in India uses Colgate. It only means that the majority of people use Colgate and hence it is called No. 1 toothpaste. The decade of the 1950s was known as’ The Golden Era of Film Music’. It did not mean that there were no films with mediocre or poor music. It only means maximum films had wonderful music. In this decade there were few – only few – films whose music was not famous, for whatever reasons. Today’s film was one such film.
In the war period from 1939 to 1945, the British Government in India had coaxed the filmmakers to make films which would help the war efforts. These were called ‘ Propaganda Films’ and the Government gave special subsidies and other concessions ( like extra quota of Raw Film at control rates) to the producer. During the 1950s the Indian Government wanted to boost the ‘Small Savings’ habit among the citizens. Some films were made upholding this scheme. Today’s film Pensioner-1954 was one such film.

Today’s song is from the film Taara-1949.
Made by New Bombay Theatres, Bombay, the film was directed by R.D.Parinja. He started his career as a Cinematographer in Bombay Talkies in its heyday.
He filmed Izzat, Prem kahani, Jeevan Prabhat, and Savitri-all 37 films, and then Kangan,Azaad,Jhoola, Bandhan,Naya sansar and Kismet.
When he was in Bombay Talkies, the German pair of Director Franz Osten and Cinematographer Joseph Wirsching were also there. He must have learnt a lot from them(or did he ?).

Today, August 19, 2025, is the 6th Remembrance Day of a ‘ruhaani‘ music director, Mohammed Zahoor Khayyam Hashmi (18/02/1927 – 19/08/2019), better known as Khayyam. His musical career can be divided into three parts. The first part (1948-67) was his struggling years during which he mostly got low budget films. In the second part (1967-74), he took sabbatical from the Hindi film industry and concentrated in composing non-film Hindi songs. In the last part of his musical career, (1974-2013) he rejoined his musical career in Hindi films during which he had a successful stint both financially and career-wise.
Khayyam was born in Rahon in Nawanshahr district (now Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar) of Punjab in a Muslim scholar’s family who loved poetry and music. There used to be a regular gathering in his father’s large library room to discuss poetry and music which included films as well as classical music. All the family members were highly educated. His father expected Khayyam to follow suit. But he was glued more to the gramophone record player listening to film songs than to his schoolbooks (akin to the addiction to smartphone among today’s school going children) as he wished to become an actor-singer like K L Saigal, his idol.

Hullo Atuldom
18th August 2025. It is the 92nd birthday (completes 91) of a most revered lyricist/ poet, writer and film director of Hindi Films. He was born Sampooran Singh Kalra in a Sikh family in the small town of Dina (now in Pakistan). Deeply engrossed in literature and poetry right from his school days, he avidly listened to Hindustani music, attended concerts by Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
His family moved to Delhi after Partition, but Sampooran moved to Bombay to pursue his ambition to become a writer. He started working as a mechanic in a garage and wrote poetry in his free time under the pen name (first) Gulzar Deenvi & later on (simply) Gulzar. All this is public knowledge.

Today’s song is from a film – Naya Kanoon-1965 – which had an offbeat story on current affairs of IPC. Unfortunately due to several reasons the film was not successful. Two reasons were there. First was, in 1965 so many iconic and milestone movies were made that anything less than their standard was unlikely to have acceptance of the audience. Secondly, the film had inherent lacunae which downgraded it.
