Most people who worked in the Film industry in any field- be it acting, direction, composing music, dancing, producing, in fact any department-joined the industry on their own. However, there was also a class of artistes who were forced by the circumstances to work in film industry- for example, the Mangeshkar sisters. Then there were artistes who were forced by their near ones to join film industry, like Meena Kumari or Madhubala, for example. And there were artistes who came on their own to build a career in film industry, like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand etc. Few artists joined the industry because it was the family tradition, like Raj Kapoor, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor etc.. In Hindi movies, actors tend to get typedcast and it is difficult for them to change their image because the audience refuse to see them in roles different from their usual ones. Thus we have had cases where some actors played the same kinds of role once they got typedcast in that role. For instance, Nazeer Khan would mostly be the hapless baap of a girl of marriageable age, while A K Hangal would always play an elderly man of principles, while C S Dubey and Kanhaiyalal would always play shifty eyed moneylenders.

When this song Khit pit khit karey aur kat kat ke girey was shared, it immediately reminded me of another song which I had heard during 1985-86 either on radio or in the collection of the music centre which I used to visit daily evening during those days.

Gulzar’s third film, as a director, Parichay (1972) has often been accused of being a copy of The Sound of Music (1963). I think that this is too much of an exaggeration, since the only common thing between the stories of the two films being a teacher, who wins over his unruly wards. That is a common theme enough in films and novels. The whole context and the treatment of the story is completely different. All said and done one can’t deny that the song saa re ke saa re has a similarity to doe a deer. The similarity is not in the tune but in the sense that both songs explain the seven notes of music.

Last night, when the 700th song of Kishore Da was posted, immediately there was a comment by Mahesh Bhai Mammadapur, requesting to know whether Kishore Da has any songs sung under the music direction of Naushad. Decidedly, this pairing is absolutely rare, because their peak periods were far apart. When Naushad was on the top in 50s and 60s, Kishore Da was considered less than a mainstream singer. And when Kishore Da ruled the world of Hindi film music in the 70s and 80s, Naushad Sb was a spent force, with really very few films to his credit during this period.
