Imagine. 33 films in a single year. And songs recorded – one hundred and eighty. In a single year. An average of almost one song every other day, composed, finalized, recorded, published. It is definitely one thing to talk about quality of music produced – that is the purist’s argument. But think of the producers who instilled their faith in the talent and work of this one music director – that is the populist argument to consider.

“Daag” (1973) was the debut movie of Yash Chopra’s production company (Yashraj Films). This movie, which was produced and directed by Yash Chopra had Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore, Manmohan Krishnan, Madan Puri, Achla Sachdev, Manmohan, A. K. Today (18 july 2013) is the first death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29 december 1942- 18 july 2012). Much have been written about him since late 1960s when he burst into the Hindi movie scene and reigned supreme. Whatever can be said and written about him has been written. Since I have to discuss a Rajesh Khanna song on this occasion, so let me also add some of my observations about Rajesh Khanna, with the full benefit of hindsight.
