Mukesh and his Co-Singers –16

I begin this very special post with a video of Asha Bhosale ji on her own youtube channel.

A short video wherein she speaks about her first 3 songs in Hindi Films.

I tried to trace the chronological accuracy of the songs enlisted in the video. What I found was that the films mentioned seem to be correct, but she has sung two songs in her second film and so her duet in Lekh (1949) could be her fourth and she mentions it as her third.

Sometime later, I will try to trace the exact chronology, but what matters for this post is her first duet in Hindi Films.

A duet with none other than Mukesh.

I request readers to watch the interesting video as Asha ji talks of her initial days in the industry.

I wish the video was fully on Mukesh, but then she digresses on some other topic.

Anyway, her first interaction with Mukesh is quite interesting and only reaffirms and confirms the godly title given to Mukesh, “a noble soul”.

As is evident from the video, Mukesh right from his initial days had no qualms on worldly pleasures and led a simple, honest and righteous life. No wonder the voice emanating from such a noble soul continues to enthral music lovers all over the world to this day.

Coming to this post, I call it special as it is my 100th Mukesh post on the blog.

Mukesh and his Composers – 45

Uncle Manohar Lal Sonik and nephew Om Prakash Sonik formed a composer-duo with the name Sonik-Omi and left behind some of the most memorable songs in HFM. However, in spite of their debut film Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966) creating musical history and many other subsequent songs in other films becoming popular, their name and fame never reached the heights it ought to have.

Ishwar Bhakti (with Giridhar) (1951) and Mamta with Hansraj Behl (1952) were probably the two films wherein Sonik composed music without Omi.

Sonik experimented with singing and assisting other composers and later when Omi joined films, he too assisted other composers for some time.

Dil Hi Tho Hai (1963) under Roshan is probably the first film where they are credited as Assistant Music Directors as Sonik-Omi. In this film, B. L Rawal must have got to know the skills of the duo and in 1966 independently allotted them Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966).

Today (1 March 2025) is the 83rd birthday of Indrani Mukherjee (born on March 01, 1942). I have watched some of her 1960s’ films mostly having pious and graceful roles. She was born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in a Bengali Brahmin family. Her father was a doctor and her mother, a housewife. She did her early schooling in Allahabad and completed her high school studies in Kolkata. From her childhood, she was interested in Hindi films.

‘Insaaf Kaa Mandir’ (1969) was produced by Sherbahadur Singh and Jagdish Singh and was written and directed by BR Ishara. The cast includes Sanjeev Kumar, Snehlata, Nadira, Asit Sen, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Tarun Bose, Manmohan Krishna, Sapru, Laxmi Chhaya, Aruna Irani, Bela Bose, Mohan Sherry, Kanu Roy etc. This was BR Ishara’s debut film as a full-fledged director. After coming to Mumbai, it took him almost 2 decades to direct his first film. But it was not that he had run away from his village to Mumbai to make a career in films. It was, what he called the ‘torturous nature’ of his uncle which drove him to Mumbai where he was prepared to grab any work including domestic servant and waiter for sustenance.

Today (5 July 2022) is the 5100th day for the blog.

Blog Day :

Regulars may have noticed lack of activity in the blog on my part for the last ten odd days. From June 25 till June 28, 7 posts were published and all these articles were posted by Sudhir jee. I had specifically requested him on 24 June 2022 that “it will be difficult for me to find time for publishing new posts from 24 june till 27 June. So I request you to uphold the blog flag for these four days.”

Sudhir jee had promised to do the needful, viz ensuring that we had at least one post on each of these days. He ended up publishing four posts on 27 June 2022, prompted by an over-enthusiastic Avinash Scrapwala, who sent many RD Burman write ups on that day for publication. 🙂
