14th july is Madan Mohan’s death anniversary. When I searched for a few Madan Mohan songs to be discussed on this occassion, I came across some unbelievable gems and I was left wondering how I have missed out on these gems all these days. I regard myself as some sort of a research scholar on Madan Mohan can be caught unawares like this, then just imagine what undiscovered Madan Mohan gems still lie ahead of us, waiting to be discovered. We have covered about 27 % of all Madan Mohan songs, and the remaining songs contain many wonderful songs as I discovered. In fact, I decided to hold some Madan Mohan songs back for some other occasions too, that is how fantastic I found those songs to be.

“Aan Baan” (1972) is one of the last movies of Rajendra Kumar as a hero. In this movie, he was paired with Rakhi, a heroine half his age. In any case, his days as Jubilee Kumar were behind him as by that time Rajesh Khanna had taken over as the new box office God by that time.

12 july is the death anniversary of Rajendra Kumar (DOB-20 july 1929-DOD 12 july 1999). Apart from moviegoers of his time, he was a delight to the movie makers too, because his movies tended to be box office hits. In fact, he was nicknamed Jubilee Kumar for this Midas touch.

“Mausam” (1975) is a movie that is known as much for the acting of Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore as for its music. Unfortunately Madan Mohan, the music director of the movie was not alive to see the success of this movie. For much of his life, movies embellished by his wonderful songs would bite the dust as the box office, and ironically, the movies released after his death, viz “Mausam” (1975) and “Laila Majnu” (1976) turned out to be hit movies riding on the music of these movies.

During late 1940s and early 1950s, Rehman used to act as hero in Hindi movies. Unfortunately most such movies with him as the hero seem to have ended up as obscure movies, and he finally had to end up making his living as character artist in subsequent years.

The usual love stories constituted the bulk of storyline in mainstream Hindi movies of the past. The fact that history and mythology provided such rich sources of stories that could be used was not given much thought by mainstream movie makers. It was left to movie makers of smaller resources (makers of B grade movies) to make movies on such topics that were regarded as risky and unviable by mainstream movie makers.
