‘Aa Jaa Sanam’ (1975) was produced by S A Mehmood and was directed by Yusuf Naqvi. The cast included Feroz Khan and Tanuja in lead roles supported by Deven Verma, Shabnam, Sulochana Chatterjee, S N Banerjee, Shivraj, Mukri, Meenaxi, S A Baker, Kalyani Bai etc.
I have recently watched the film for the first time and I am surprised that it is shot in ‘Black and White’ for a 1975 released film by which time almost all the Hindi films were made in colour. Obviously, the film must have got held up for a long time before it was released. I guess that the film may have been shot around mid-1960s going by the trends of costume used by Feroz Khan who is seen with narrow bottom pants. By the starts of 1970, the fashion of bell-bottom pants was seen in many films. Also, the film has all three male voice songs of Mohammed Rafi whereas after the post-Aradhana (1969) period, Kishore Kumar would have got at least one song for the film if not more because the film distributors normally used to insist.

If one takes a look on Hindi films made with the title as ‘आम्रपाली’ (Amrapali), there are only two movies made with this title. The first movie was released in the year 1945 and the second one was released in the year 1966. All the songs for the movie of the year 1966 have been covered on this blog. That movie, whose music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan had some great songs in it.
‘Amrapali’ released in the year 1945 had eleven songs in it. Seven songs of this movie have been covered so far.
This historical movie was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal for Murli Movietone, Bombay. The cast of this movie included Prem Adib, Sabita Devi, Jeevan, Arun, Jagdish, Badri Prasad, Sankata Prasad, Gulab, Kabeer and others. Kavi Pradeep wrote eleven songs for this movie under the name of Miss Kamal B.A. and Music for this movie was composed by Saraswati Devi.

The cast included Mala Sinha, Sanjay Khan, Nazima, Vijay Kumar, Johny Walker, Jagirdar, Amar, Pravin Paul, Bela Bose, Zeb Sultana, Tony Walker, Bela Bose, Ratan Gurung etc. The film’s producer, Tony Walker (real name: Kamaluddin Kazi) was Johny Walker’s brother and film’s other actor, Vijay Kumar ( real Name: Waheeduddin Kazi) was the youngest brother of Johny and Tony Walker. Probably, this was the only film in which all the three brothers acted together.

Sometime in early 1980s, I had heard a non-film song, ‘mohe aayee na jag se laaj…..ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ which was rendered by Pankaj Udhas. At that time, I did not think much about this song but its hook line ‘ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ periodically reminded me of the song. After the death of Pankaj Udhas in 2024, his old non-film songs started ‘bumping up’ on the video sharing platforms during which I heard this song in full after many years and liked it, more so because of its lyrics. Since then, I was planning to cover this non-film song for the Blog. But I was not sure about the genesis of this song, particularly when I came to know that the song was written by Pakistani poet and lyricist, Qateel Shifai. So, I kept the song in hold until I got some clarity about it. After doing some reseach on the internet, I am now in a position to write the article on the song.
