“Bhed” (1950) was an an Amba Cinetone (Jal K Baliwaala productions), Bombay presentation. Details of its producer, director, actors etc are not available. Today’s song is from a lesser known film ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ (1958).  Made by National Cine Corporation, it was produced by Daljit and directed by the veteran Nanubhai Vakil.

As we all know, in the early era of films – both silent and talkie, many actresses came from the traditional singing families (read tawaiafs). Average to good looks and ability to sing tolerably were their main qualifications. Many of these girls joined film line for two reasons. One – it gave them name, fame and money and the more importantly second – they tried to catch a big fish to marry. Many of them succeeded in this and we can see many examples of such marriages and live-in relationships of these girls in the film line. Gujarati producers and directors were in the forefront in this matter.

Remembering Geeta Dutt.

She passed away 45 years ago on 20th July in 1972, brining to close a tumultuous and tragic life, all of 41 years. A voice that held so much promise, and yes, she gave too, so many wonderful gems to remember her by. Just going by the numbers – the decade of 1950s carries close to 850 songs sung by her. And then, in the 1960s, she has recorded less than hundred. And the majority of them belonging to the first half of the decade.
