The image of Chitragupt is that of a music director – a creator of a treasure trove of heavenly melodies that are so numerous that a good representative sampler will take a long time to compile. In a career that lasted almost five decades in the industry, he composed music for almost 150 films in Hindi and Bhojpuri. Most of the time he had to be content with B/C grade stunt films and religious films, with a few sorties into the A grade categories. But whatever may have been the grade, the music by him has always been fabulous, no matter what the category of the film, and whatever was its fate.

When I had watched “Mother India” (1957) for the first time during late 1970s/ early 1980s, I did not realise that the movie had so many songs in it. I throught that the movie have about five or six songs in it. “Hum Paanch” (1980) was a S K Films Enterprises production. It was produced by Surinder Kapoor and directed by Bapu. “Palkon ki Chhaon mein”(1977) was a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. Despite boasting such big names, and despite a very nice storyline, the movie was a box office failure.
