55th birthday of A. R. Rehman

Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing, there is a field. I will meet you there. – Rumi
Some years ago, I received a Whatsapp forward featuring a sketch with Rumi’s character, in a 21st century setting. This requires careful description, so you all please be patient with me.
There he was, 13th century persian poet and philosopher, Jalaludding Rumi, turban and all, sitting on one end of a small primitive boat. A boat that fits in a New York apartment’s living room. Guess who is doing the honors of ‘Chappu chalauing’ at the other end of the boat? It was Chandler, of ‘Friends’ fame. Imagine a boat on the floor of a city living room, at one end Chandler is roving the boat and Rumi is sitting on the other end. The caption with it, also in 21st century English, read “When you are looking for a Roomie and misspell it!”
Ha Ha Ha Ha. If no one is laughing, I have only myself to blame for thinking of Rumi. “ham wahan hain jahan se ham ko bhi kuchh hamaari khabar nahi aati”

Hullo Atuldom
It is winter and the temperatures in Bangalore and adjoining regions have taken a dip. I am sure North India will be much colder, I don’t know what is the experience of those in western and eastern India. But then, winter is the feature for the entire Northern hemisphere at this time of the year.
We have categories on the blog, that songs are tagged under. The Category “Rain” and “Saawan” have around 86 and 109 posts/ songs respectively. “Saawan” is used to talk of rains and is also the month in the Hindu calendar, when the Indian sub-continent experiences heavy monsoon rains.

Today’s song is a rare song by Meena Mangeshkar from the film Aabroo-1956.
Meena Mangeshkar is the number two of the 4 Mangeshkar sisters – Lata, Meena, Asha and Usha, with the youngest sibling being their brother Hridaynath. Meena was born on 8-9-1931 to Master Deenanath Mangeshkar and wife Shevanti. Like other sisters, Meena too got education in Music from her father and other experts, but she never entered the film line for singing, because she got married to Vasant Khadikar, a businessman, quite early as per prevailing norms those days. By the way, Meena is the only one among the 4 sisters to have been married to a single person throughout her life. Lata and Usha never got married while Asha was the most experienced. She had 3 Life partners. Meena lost her husband in 2011. She has a son-Yogesh and a daughter-Rachana.

Rafi sahab sang 80 + songs under C. Ramchandra, starting from 1946 to 1977 beginning with Bachchon ka Khel(1) and Safar(2) in 1946. This is followed by 6 songs in ‘Saajan’(1947), two each in “Khidki’ and ‘Nadiya ke Paar’ in 1948.
Two of the most melodious Solos, which made both Rafi sahab and C. Ramchandra , famous have seen the light of day by this time. ‘These are ‘keh ke bhi na aaye tum, ab chhupne lage taare’ in Safar 1946 and ‘ham ko tumhaara hi aasra tum hamaare ho na ho’ in Saajan 1947. Geeta Dutt, Lalita Deulkar and Shamshad Begum feature in group songs and duets with Rafi in all these films till 1949.

I count the minutes the days the hours. . .
I count the stars. . .
Days, then weeks, then months – on to years and decades. The march of time incessantly continues. Superimposed on this unremitting progression is a calendar that allows us to measure passages of time. The philosophers of yore had no tools other than observation and contemplation, by which they used to measure natural phenomena. And then this measurement and contemplation over long periods of time uncovered patterns of celestial movements which tied into the the design of changing climate on earth. And thus was born the concept of calendar and measures of years. Over a period of time it got refined into a detailed structure that we now see as twelve months and 365 days. Of course with further refinements of leap years and leap centuries to make accurate adjustments to synchronize the this framework with the precise movement of Sun in our skies.
