Today’s song is from film Azaadi-35.

It is always a pleasure for me to write on films and songs of the 1930s and the 1940s. It is a different world altogether and traversing on the path of these decades is easy, for there is no crowd here. Not many writers are interested in discussing songs from the 1930s in details.

There are several reasons for this. First and foremost is lack of information. Considering what our love for recording history of old films and the artistes is, one has to be lucky to a great extent to have enough material to write about, in the first place. Secondly, most artistes of the 1930s and early 1940s were the lot carried forward or brought forward from the Silent Era. By the end of the first 10 years, most of these brought forward artistes went into oblivion and new force of artistes entered the film industry.

Having overcome the guilt of not contributing any song posts to one of my favourite blogs, I now feel mentally at ease.

My younger son got married recently. All our energy and resources were directed towards making this event a great success. We were very lucky that everything went as planned and now both my boys are happily married and have moved into their own sweet homes. Me and my wife now have the task of downsizing our 5 bedroom house to a more manageable 2 or 3 bedroom house. This process will be completed within the next 3 to 6 months.

Missing Films of 1960s – 53
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Lal Lal Gaal. . .

I know I do not need to say more. Everyone is so familiar this song. And the special thing about this song? In my humble opinion, this probably is the fastest melody that any music director has got Rafi Sb to sing. The year is 1957 and the film – ‘Mr X’.

And then, this same music director, ten years later, has got the booming voice Mahendra Kapoor to sing the softest of the melodies – “Chaand Bhi Koi Deewaana Hai. . .”. The year is 1968 and the film – ‘Apna Ghar Apni Kahaani’.

Remembering N Datta – well quite late for his anniversary (both of which fell in December). And so this post has also been in the making, for well about a month.

The blog activities have picked up pace quite a bit in this new year. Almost all contributors are quite active. I hope this pace is sustained, and does not peter out like the enthusiastic short term flings of the resolutioners. Gajendra ji had commented that it generally is a euphoria that lasts about a week into the new year. But in this case, ‘रब नजर ना लगाए’, we seem to be going great guns for over three weeks now. So far, it portends all good for the continuing activity. Now only if responses in the comments column also pick up pace. 🙂

Greetings to all readers and friends, on the occasion of marking the Republic Day event of our country.

In the notes exchanged with Atul ji over the past week, it comes about that the 1966 film ‘Sushila’ is just one song short of being a Yippeee film on the blog. And quite fortunately, the remaining song in the list is actually very appropriate for the celebration of 26th January. Scrambling to locate this song, we are unsuccessful to find it posted online. And so the quick decision was to upload the song, post it for 26th January celebrations and in the process add one more to the list of Yippeee’d films.

In the process of realizing this plan, as I checked the songs folder for this film in my collection, I was in for a very peculiar surprise. I checked and checked again with the Geet Kosh and also with the list of songs available on the blog. There had to be an error somewhere. Actually, the songs folder in my collection was showing one song extra than the 6 songs that are supposed to be there. Checking with Geet Kosh, the number seems to tally. Our Yippeee films lists also shows this film as being one song short. So how come I have an extra song.

Republic day is a holiday that nearly everyone looks forward to in this country.

As a kid I would hate the day, though. We would have to get ready even earlier than usual, find our way to school for the ‘jhanda vandan’ – flag hoisting ceremony. I would usually be both in the marchpast and the patriotic dance. So, I would have to do a sneak off as soon as the flag is hoisted and get in costume for a badly choreographed patriot dance which had more in common with the actions that accompany a nursery rhyme.

I would then head back home where the society ‘jhanda vandan‘ would be over already and there would be poha for breakfast. My friends and I would chill together and then head home once our parents have finally gone hoarse from calling out to us for lunch. Then of course it would be the ol’e hearty meal and hearty sleep routine.

I congratulate all our readers on the auspicious occasion of this 69th REPUBLIC DAY of our country (26 january 2018).

Seriously, how many of us really know the definition of a Republic ? As per the Oxford Dictionary, “A Republic is a sovereign country, which is organised with a form of Government in which the power resides with elected individuals, who exercise power according to the rule of the law “. In short, it is a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

After India achieved freedom in 1947, some films on Patriotic themes were made. ‘Andolan’ (1951) was one such film. Made by Harnam Motwane, under his banner Motwane Ltd, this film is labelled as a ‘historic’ film by HFGK. That may be because in this film the history of India’s independence struggle from 1885 to 1947 is shown with the documentaries and actual footage (with a basic film story, of course) from short films made by Films Division and some film companies like Krishna and Kohinoor films.
