Hullo Atuldom
Today (5 february 2018) is Monday, first day of a working week and the song with this post is asking for a weekend. I had fallen in love with it the minute I heard it about 2/3 years back in 2015. I had immediately noted its lyrics so that I could use it at the first opportunity.
This song is neither unique nor rare. It is from a movie where the young actor has co-starred with a senior actor whom he had probably addressed as uncle in the 1980s/90s. The junior actor was a bigger fan of the senior than the junior was of his own father’s.

In the early 1970s in Mumbai, it was quite common to see Pathan moneylenders standing outside the gates of the factories, mills, railway workshops and even some of the Government offices. Pathan moneylenders used to lend money at high interest rates, mostly to workers and subordinate staff who were in perpetual need of money. I had frequently watched them standing outside the main gate of my office, normally in pair, during the first week of every month. Their operations were always discreet without inviting any attention from the passers-by except that their distinct dress and caps would identify them to be the Pathans.
I had got the first hand information on the modus operandi of the Pathan moneylenders from one of my subordinate staff who was perpetually indebted to them. On the salary day, they would be present at the gate at the start of the office, at lunch time and the office closing time. If a borrower is not able to pay the monthly interest/principal amount, he would try to avoid the Pathans by not going out of the office during lunch time, would leave the office well before the closing time or leave late. But the network of the Pathans was so large that they would eventually catch the defaulters and get at least the interest amount by their discreet strong arm methods.

The yippeee film for today the 1972 production by Manoj Kumar – ‘Shor’.
There was a period in the career of Manoj Kumar, where every film he touched has either been a hit, or it has commanded a cult status over the years. Starting with ‘Shaheed’ in 1965, and right up to ‘Kranti’ in 1981, he produced, directed and acted in a string of hit films, that have become memorable icons over the years. It was ‘Shaheed’ in 1965, then ‘Upkar’ in 1967, then ‘Poorab Aur Pashchim’ and ‘Yaadgar’ in 1970, then ‘Shor’ in 1972, ‘Roti Kapda Aur Makan’ in 1974, and then ‘Kranti’ in 1981. Of these, the 1972 production of ‘Shor’ is kind of the odd one out – it is not really a patriotic / nationalist theme, that is Manoj Kumar’s forte, that earned him the nickname of Mr Bhaarat. After 1981, Manoj Kumar seemed to have lost his touch, and after a string of indifferent productions – ‘Painter Babu’ (1983), ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan’ (1987), and ‘Clerk’ (1989), he kind of let go the production / direction stance.

As I am searching for a song to make the debut post for today, my mind goes to check the anniversaries page, and I find that today is the anniversary of passing away of Pt Shivram. This gives me an impetus and I start exploring the films for which Pt Shivram has composed the music. After going thru the list of his films, as given in the Geet Kosh, I find that although his work in Hindi cinema is confined to about 23 films, there still are some of his films that are not yet represented on our blog. So I search through his pending films, and I come across this obscure film, albeit from a major banner.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 61 # Movies with same titles ‘Haar Jeet’
———————————————–—————————————–
Recently our dear Kamath Saab shared the song ‘Mast Pawan Shaakhen Lehraayen’ from the 1940 movie ‘Haar Jeet’. And seeing that post I immediately recalled sharing one song from the film having the same title – ‘Haar Jeet’ and released in 1972. I thought that a song from this ‘Haar Jeet’ (1972) was already posted on the blog. Or maybe it was discussed in some post or mentioned in comments on the blog.

Aah, the magical triple zero. There is always quite a long wait to get to a milestone that carries all zeroes in the last three digits. Welcome all, to the fourteenth such milestone. Yes, I hear you say it – it IS getting to be a staggering collection, this ASAD blog. You can pick your time preference, we are on to the
- 3, 485th day, or
- at 497 weeks and 6 days, or
- 114 months and 14 days, or
- 9 Years, 6 Months and 14 Days
of the continued proliferation of this blog.
Given where we are today, and from when we started, the average posting rate has been a tad over 4 songs a day, 4.0172 to be precise. Or to put it another way, if we were exactly at 4 songs a day, then today we would have been at 13,940, requiring 15 more days to hit the 14K milestone. So we are running marginally faster than 4 songs a day. And today morning, I was just wondering, maybe I should suggest to Atul ji, and maybe we should name this blog as AFSAD, instead of ASAD. OK yes, you guessed it right – Atul-Four-Songs-A-Day. 😀 😀

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# The Special Voices of the decade – 2 # Anwar #
———————————————–———————-
Welcome all to this second article under this series.
In this series we are discussing Special Voices which emerged on the horizon of HFM in the years of Seventies, and who in their own way have left an indelible mark in the minds of music lovers leaving behind legacy of many many memorable songs.
These Special Voices are those singers who make their entry in Hindi Film Music when the legends like Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor among Male Singers and Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, among female singers were already ruling the Hindi Film Music scene. Still, these new voices, when they entered into HFM, took the audience by storm. Some of them were successful enough and popular too, and they continue to sustain for a long time.

“Piya Tune Kya Kiya Re, Tere Bin Laage Na Jiya” – this post in 2008 by Atul ji inspired me to sit through an otherwise serious (read boring) movie. In the post Atul ji had written 3 postscripts each after different stages of movie watching and getting more gyaan about the movie. There is nothing more to add about the movie if one reads that particular post.

Missing Films of 1960s – 54
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
‘Mohabbat Aur Jung’ seems to be a rare and obscure film from 1967. The video of this song is available online, but not much information about the film is available. Existence of the video indicates that the film is in public domain. However, neither the film, nor any other song from this film is as yet uploaded.
The information in the Geet Kosh is also not complete. It identifies this as a stunt film, from the banner of Uppal Productions, Bombay. The list of actors, and the director’s name, both are not available. The uploader has indicated a list of names, viz., Radha Saluja, Ram Mohan, Helen, Shankar, purportedly to be a short list of actor names in this film. Film’s director is S Azim. The list of actors is Randhawa, Helen, Indira, Sunder, Ram Mohan, Sherry, Sujata Bakshi.
[Ed Note: The names of actors, and that of the director are provided by dear Sadanand ji, based on the information on the film poster. Thanks Sadanand ji.]

Today’s song is from film Azaadi-35.
It is always a pleasure for me to write on films and songs of the 1930s and the 1940s. It is a different world altogether and traversing on the path of these decades is easy, for there is no crowd here. Not many writers are interested in discussing songs from the 1930s in details.
There are several reasons for this. First and foremost is lack of information. Considering what our love for recording history of old films and the artistes is, one has to be lucky to a great extent to have enough material to write about, in the first place. Secondly, most artistes of the 1930s and early 1940s were the lot carried forward or brought forward from the Silent Era. By the end of the first 10 years, most of these brought forward artistes went into oblivion and new force of artistes entered the film industry.
