Sizzlers of the 60s – the phrase brings a handful of names to the mind. Of course, we have Helen and Bela Bose. And there are some performances by Aruna Irani, Laxmi Chhaaya. But talking of performances worthy of burning down the projection screens, the one name that you cannot do without is Faryal. This fairy queen of cabaret was a strong contender for the number two spot behind Helen, for long years in the 60s and 70s. Her dance numbers in films like ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967) (on instrumental music) and ‘Taxi Driver’ (1973) “Pyaar Karte Ho Yaar. . .” are some of the most fascinating cabarets in Hindi cinema.

Imagine that you reached someplace where a song is playing, probably on a radio. But unfortunately it seems you have missed almost the entire song. What you hear as you get into listening range is just the last one or two lines playing. The words you hear do not seem to be part of the main song lyrics. And the words you hear do not seem to make a coherent sentence. You may just skip the thought and move on. Or if you are more Hindi-film-music inclined, you would start to wonder what the song was and who would have been the singer of this song, of which you have heard just a snippet.

Voice of Mukesh #5
——————————

Ah, so now we arrive at the turning point of Mukesh’s fledgling career that made him capture the attention of all concerned, and be launched on to the sky of Hindi films, never to look back. The year is 1945, the film is ‘Pehli Nazar’, and the singer Mukesh – well, it almost did not happen.

The year 1945 saw the release of two films which had songs by Mukesh. The films are ‘Moorti’ and ‘Pehli Nazar’. The latter, of course, is the film that set Mukesh on the path of stardom as a singer. Let us first talk about ‘Moorti’.

The Voice of Mukesh #3
—————————-
As I come in to the third post in this series, I must put on record that I have still not been able to trace and secure a recording of the second duet from the film ‘Dukh Sukh’ (1942). The duet – “Mori Atariyaa Pe Aa Jaa, O Pardesi Panchhi”, is sung with Sitara. And I repeat my request to my friends and fellow contributors on this blog, to please inform in case one has any information about the availability of this song. I am hopeful we shall get to hear this song, since the physical record number is known – N26105. Right now, just waiting for the luck to strike.

A song awaiting to be posted for some time. One of the drafts that I lost a few weeks back when my computer had crashed. And now, here it is. A remarkable haunting melody, from the same composer who conjured up the refrain for “Kahin Deep Jaley Kahin Dil”. Maybe a lesser known and less often heard creation, nonetheless a melody that, once heard, will surely continue to echo through the corridors of the mind. When I had posted the song “Koi Bechaara. . .”, Derubala ji had specifically responded with a comment picking out this song as a favorite.

A post that has been waiting to be keyed in for many days now. And I have two reminders from AK ji already. Two weeks ago, the music lovers community in Delhi had a rare treat. A few local enthusiasts had come together and sponsored a visit by Mubarak Begum, the famous singer of the 50s and 60s, and a live program was arranged on the evening of 6th October, a Saturday. I had informed AK ji about the program, and he was also able to attend. The program was arranged at the India Islamic Center on Lodhi Road, and the primary sponsor of this program was an NGO by the name Panch Tattwa. Another sponsor is a person who is a good friend of mine.

The Voice of Mukesh #2
——————————–
Listening to the first song of Mukesh, ‘Dil Hi Bujhaa Huaa Ho To Fasl e Bahaar Kyaa’ from the film ‘Nirdosh’ (1941), one is suitably impressed by this maiden effort from a singer, whom we now know as a stalwart of the Hindi film music. But back then in 1941, this debut happened singularly unacknowledged, failing to impress the public, the music directors and film producers. With Saigal Saab’s voice reigning supreme at that time, most people wrote off this voice as another Saigal imitator, trying to make it good with a voice sounding like the great icon. And what with the icon still in full bloom and alive, this song by Mukesh failed to evoke any great level of interest. And so started the career of Mukesh, unimpressive and indifferent.

The relentless dedication of one man, and his companions on this musical bandwagon, is clearly evident from the consistent pace at which this blog is making progress by the day. A hundred songs are being consistently added every two weeks, give or take a couple of days. It is this consistency that is the most remarkable feature of this effort. The unflagging interest and the singular determination that is exhibited by the entire team, speaks volumes about the leadership and dedication of this one man.

And yes, we are celebrating another century of posts on this blog today.

Arun ji made a debut earlier this week, with his first post not only on this blog, but also on Harvey Pam’s blog. On Harvey’s blog, he posted his selection of top 10 cycle songs from Hindi films. The selection is very interesting and endearing. And the icing on the cake is the huge list of comments that followed this post, with no less than 19 more songs suggested by other readers, to add to the list of top 10 that Arun ji has posted.
