Missing Films of 1960s – 60
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The debut film for today is ‘Bhakt Prahlad’, the quintessential historical / mythological saga that has been repeated so often across the decades. I would say that, along with the tale of Raja Harishchandra, the story of Bhakt Prahlad probably forms the most times filmed pair of historical / mythological tales. As per Geet Kosh, the story of Bhakt Prahlad has been presented on the silver screen no less than six times – the years in chronological order being 1932, 1934, 1946, 1959, 1965 and 1967. Besides this set of films in Hindi, this tale has also been a subject of many other films released in regional cinema.

Missing Films of 1960s – 59
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

So, on the 3501st day on this blog, I introduce to you the debut film for today.

The film is ‘Sardaar’ from 1967. This year continues to be very fertile, and still another four, and maybe five more films from this year are next in line.

The production banner is M.U.N. films Bombay, and the film is directed by Babubhai Mistry. The film is categorized as a costume drama, with the cast of actors listed as Dara Singh, Sheikh Mukhtar, Ajit, Nishi, Helen, Jayant, Chandrashekhar, Tiwari, Maruti, Arvind Pandya, and Jeevankala. Now this is a very impressive ensemble – we have Sheikh Mukhtar, and Dara Singh, and Ajit, and Chandrashekhar, and Nishi, and Helen, and Jayant, and Tiwari – wow.

3500 – a good number to be. It is divisible by 7. Gives us 500.

Lets take a stock of the major numbers.

We complete 3500 days – unbroken sequence (almost 😉 ).
500 weeks.
14,000+ songs.

And, for the ticker watchers, we are just going to touch 10,100,000 visits to this blog.

In terms of artist stats, some very interesting total numbers,

486 – Music Directors + 109 posts with [*Unattributed] MD status
659 – Lyricists + 402 posts with [*Unattributed] Lyricist status
870 – Singers + 93 posts with unidentified singer names

Keeping out the unattributed and the unidentified, we are managing a whopping total of 2015 unique artists

I have written this phrase before. Our blog is history in the making – history of Hindi film music – one song at a time.

सिर्फ एक गीतों का ही तो आसरा है॰ ॰ ॰ और कहाँ आवाज़ दें तुमको, ना जाने किस जहान् में चले गए॰ ॰ ॰

We arrive at the sixth episode of this series – a lively duet from the 1963 film ‘Holiday In Bombay’.

The song found me, literally, and bowled me back into my childhood, into the radio listening days, and this seldom heard lullaby that simply takes you into a dreamland. One of those songs in which the words, the music and the rendition comes together a such a perfect blend that listening to it, the world disappears, and for a while it is just yourself with the song and the music.

I was actually planning another 1960s film for debut and was searching online for posted songs for a film that I had identified. Without any preamble or focused thought, I just stumbled into this song. Nothing else struck me, except the first five words, that resonated with a long dormant memory somewhere deep in time. And without a notice, this song was upon me.

The film that is reaching its Yippeee station today is the 1952 film ‘Anjaam’. A journey that started for this film a little over seven years ago – on 1st Jan, 2011. Just out of curiosity, I checked the list of posts for the songs posted on that date, I find that none of the songs on that day were new year songs. My curiosity heightened, I checked the previous new year days and the ones after this date. I find that on our blog, the tradition of new year songs starts with 1st Jan, 2012. Prior to that, on the three new years that came, we did not specifically have any new year songs. But that is a curiosity, to be handled in another post.

Missing Films of 1960s – 58

1966 and 1967 appears to be very fertile years, as far as discovering obscure films and songs is concerned. I start searching for the films from these years, and I continue finding films and songs that seem to have been lost in time. A good number of them have already appeared online in one form or another. But there is still a good set that seem to be as yet unavailable online.

It would be late 1960s, early 1970s – फिल्में देखने का चस्का चढ़ा था। Did not have much more than some fanciful fancies at that time, and very little understanding. I would fancy the heroes, especially Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar etc. And I would have lasting crush on the leading ladies; generally lasting for a few weeks. I would fancy them to be my leading ladies 😉 – Sadhna, Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Saira Banu etc.

Besides these two types of fancies, there was, yes one more. This was not so much of a fancy, rather it was more of an abhorrent fright. Of a special person when he appeared on the screen. And a panic would run through the mind and I would clutch a parent’s hand and whisper “oye, Pran aa gaya”.

‘ए’ – एक दिल हैं एक जान हैं

तुम मुझे यूं भुला ना पाओगे
जब कभी भी सुनोगे गीत मेरे
संग संग तुम भी गुनगुनाओगे॰ ॰ ॰

क्या सच ब्यान कर गए आप, रफी साब॰ ॰ ॰

Your voice, and your songs are so imprinted on the memory, that the mind sings along the verses, every time it hears any of your songs. These memories are now lifelong; they will not be deserted till the last breath.

Moving forward with the series of duets – I am skipping ‘ऊ’ because no duet song starting with this vowel is available. So I come to ‘ए’, as the starting letter for today’s song.
