In the second half of 1960s and the first half of 1970s, Shashi Kapoor was the busiest actor in the industry.  After his struggle years of early 1960s, and riding on the success of films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965), he started getting offers in such huge numbers, and because he did not turn down any one, there was a time when he was booked for almost 5 to 7 years at a single stretch.

Mention of RK Films brings to mind the unbroken partnership of 22 long years between the music director duo of Shankar Jaikishan and the songwriters Shialnedra and Hasrat Jaipuri.  Starting from ‘Barsaat’ in 1949, and all the way up to ‘Mera Naam Joker’ in 1971, this quartet ruled the music and songs at RK Films, collaborating for every RK film produced during this period (with the exception of Shailendra, who passed away in 1966).

Remembering Hasrat Jaipuri on the anniversary of his birth today (15th April).

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 3
—————————————————–

There is something very special about his voice.  Not that other thespians of the industry are any way less impressive.  Every actor and actress have their own unique styles and expressions, and many of them have become memorable across the decades.  The sounds and the words sometimes combine together to leave such an imprint on the mind of the audiences, that certain dialogues of certain artists become popular and become part of the current idiom.

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 2

I am sure everyone remembers Dr. Bhaskar Bannerji.  A very young rookie doctor, who is very troubled with the state of health affairs in general.  An introvert and reserved person, living a very sedate life.  The story is ‘Anand’ and the actor behind the Babu Moshai character captured the attention and the imagination of the audiences and critics alike.  He was new, and struggling and still to land a lead role for himself.  That was 1970.

Ok so now we know – प्यार किसे कहते हैं। (what is this thing we call love). Explained quite lucidly in this song.

jabse mili teri meethi mohabbat
chocolate ka khaana chhod diya

Discovering your sweet love
Have forsaken even chocolate

Aah, what a sublime sacrifice, forsaking the delicious trappings of this world, all for having found love.  Nothing, no other sacrifice could be more convincing.

From the email that Khyati Behn sent me with the lyrics of this song, I reproduce the epithet she has used – “One more song to add to Lataji’s THE BEST MELODIES EVER COLLECTION.”  I heard this song, and I do agree with her.  A song par excellence, that has long been relegated to anonymity for various reasons and circumstances.

The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 4

Imagine the treasures lost.  The true magnitude may never be measured correctly.  We have a definitive record, in the shape of Hindi Film Geet Kosh, which presents the most complete information available.  The sense of completeness and correctness can be gauged by the fact that the compiler, Shri Harmandir Singh ji ‘Hamraaz’, went back to dig out the past records of the censor board, and also searched and retrieved as many film information booklets as possible, in his effort to compile as complete and as accurate set of information, as possible.  Even with this momentous effort that he has put in, he still acknowledges that the information is not yet 100%.

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 1
—————————————————

A super star status that has outlived and outlasted all other sovereignties in the history of the Hindi film industry.  A persona that has matured and changed with times, with a grace that is unequalled.  Amitabh Bachchan, a phenomena in the Hindi film world that goes beyond the normal definitions of a super star.

Today, 6th April, is the birth anniversary of Sanjay Suri, a star of our current times.

Born this day in 1971, he is a native of Srinagar in Kashmir.  In 1990, his father was killed in a terrorist attack, and his family was forced to flee their hometown.  They came to Jammu and then settled down in Delhi.

The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 3
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

It is 1934 and the fledgling Hindi talkie film industry is in its fourth year only.  The volume of business is slowly continuing to grow.  In the three years prior i.e. 1931-33, a total of 161 films were certified by the Censor Board.  1934 saw a sharp increase in production and in all, 120 new films were certified in this year.  And this production is coming not just from Bombay.  Of course, a major share is produced in Bombay, but almost a quarter of this number comes from the production studios in Calcutta.  Then come Pune, Kolhapur and Lahore – really just a handful.  But still signifying that the production of Hindi films was a focus at multiple centers around the subcontinent.
