“Ham Ek Hain” (1946) is a movie with a message. in this movie, Durga Khote, a noble widowed matriarch brings up many orphan kids in addition to her own son. These kids are her own son Shankar (Dev Anand), and orphans Yusuf (Rehman), John (Rane) and Durga (Rehana). As can be seen, she is raising three boys of three different religions as her own, thus sending a strong message of “Ham ek Hain” (We are one).

As with many movies of that era, I saw Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahaani (1946) on Doordarshan as a child. Sometimes, I am thankful for the times and the circumstances I grew up in. As teenagers, we did never have enough pocket money to spend on visits to the cinema halls. Our cinematic excursions were limited to view the weekly movie on DD, that too at a friend’s home. There was a time, many others would also remember, the weekly movie was actually shown partly on Saturday and partly on Sunday. I can recall a long list of movies from the 30s to the 50s thus viewed. This was before the time cable took over, and a black and white showing on the TV screen became a rarity. And the movies watched then, had a lasting impression and influence on my mind. The life and times were simpler; the movies and its people meant a value in social and traditional terms, and money was not the name of the game.

I have discussed four songs from “Do Aankhen Baarah Haath” (1956) in the past. Here is another song from this movie that I heard for the first time only a few hours ago. This song is an inspirational children’s song. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Sandhya. The picturisation shows Sadhya giving a vigorous and energetic dance perfrmance to young kids on this song.

In Hindi movies, most songs are picturised on the lead actors. But then there are certain songs which are either background songs or songs picturised on lesser actors. These songs are often sung by part time singers who are better known for some other activities in movies. For instance, these singers may be better known as lyricists or music directors.

The general memory of the 1969 movie, Saat Hindustaani, is linked to the fact that it was the debut movie for Amitabh Bachhan. However, in my mind, this movie is more associated with the writer director Khwaja Ahmed Abbas or KA Abbas. The Wikipeadia page on Abbas Saab contains very interesting information about this personality, e.g. fact like his family tree is traced back to Ayub Ansari, a close associate of Prophet Mohammed, and that his grandfather was one of the prominent soldiers in the 1857 uprising against the Britishers and a martyr, sentenced to be blown on a cannon, and that Abbas Saab is the great great great grandfather of Shahid Kapoor. Besides these familial facts, Abbas Saab has been a prolific writer and journalist, and a noted story writer and film maker in Hindi Cinema. His column ‘Last Page’ in ‘Blitz’, the Bombay based newspaper, ran from 1935 to 1987, the longest running column in the history of Indian journalism. He wrote 73 books in Hindi, Urdu and English, and is considered as one of the premier Urdu short story writers of the 20th century.

Earlier decades of Indian independence (1950s and 1960s) saw much enthusiasm for nation building in public life as well as in movies. And Soviet Union style socialism was considered the way to progress. Many movies were made on the theme of nation building in those days. and these movies naturally had songs to inspire people.

Lyrics

itihaas agar likhna chaaho
itihaas agar likhna chaaho
aazaadi ke majmoon se
itihaas agar likhna chaaho
aazaadi ke majmoon se

to seencho apni dharti ko veeron tum apne khoon se
har har har mahaadev alla hu akbar
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar

aapas mein ladna chhodo bhedbhaav ka sar todo
aapas me ladna chhodo bhedbhaav ka sar todo
watan pe aafat aayi hai to taar dil ka dil se jodo
taar dil ka dil se jodo
agar bandhna chaahe koi zulm bhare kaanoon se
zulm bhare kaanoon se
to seencho apni dharti ko veeron tum apne khoon se
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar

hamen na abla samjhe koi
ham bhaarat ki naari hain
ham bhaarat ki naari hain
komal komal phool nahin
ham jwaala hain chingaari hain
ham jwaala hain
chingaari hain

chhod do paayal ki jhankaar haath mein lo teekhi talwar
hata do ghoonghat ka singaar
bano ranchandi ka avtaar
hey ambe jagdambe
hey ambe jagdambe
hey ambe jagdambe
hey ambe jagdambe

taar dil ka dil se jodo
agar jo chaaho vatan hamaara
hansta rahe sakoon se
hansta rahe sakoon se
to seencho apni dharti ko veeron tum apne khoon se
har har har mahaadev alla hu akbar
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar

itihaas agar likhna chaaho aazadi ke majmoon se
to seencho apni dharti ko veeron tum apne khoon se
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar
har har har mahadev alla hu akbar

When India became independent in 1947, the nationalistic fervour among the newly independant Indians was naturally at its peak. People wanted to forge their own identity and one of the battle cries that was frequently heard those days was to give up wearing Western clothings and wear native clothings. Dressing up western style, applying make up etc was regarded as western and was mocked.

Here is an obscure song from an obscure movie. This song is a movie opening song in the sense that this song plays in the background as the creditss roll on the screen. And the credits roll on the screen rather interestingly too.
