Right from the silent era first film in 1913 till 1936, it was something daring for a film story. It was the first of its type.Later on also, for whatever unknown reasons, very few films were made on pirates. When Prabhat decided on this story, the big question was who to be chosen for the main role. Durga khote’s name was finalised as she looked suitable for the role of a desperate yet kind and strong yet lovable character of the woman pirate.

Today’s song is from the film Alakh Niranjan-1940.

This was a bilingual film made in Hindi and Marathi (in Marathi the title was ‘ Gorakhnath ‘). This was made by Arun Pictures, a banner floated and owned by the film’s director Bhal G. Pendharkar. Bhal ji, like V.Shantaram, was trained by the Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter, who employed them in his pioneer film company ‘ The Maharashtra Film Company’, Kolhapur.

In this series, we are trying to cover all the songs from 1957 film ‘Anjali’, which happens to be Jaidev’s third released film. Prior to this, he had only one released film in each of the prior two years; 1955 – ‘Joru Ka Bhai’, and 1956 – ‘Samundari Daku’. Not at all a successful entry in film music world. He had to wait till 1961 and the film ‘Hum Dono’ to be recognized as a great composer, capable to catch attention of classes and masses. However, to the true good music lovers (including me), all of his tunes right from his first film are gems.
