Plagiarism, or what is euphemistically called “taking inspiration” is nothing new for hindi movies. A few days back on the occasion of Amitabh and Rekha’s birthday I spoke of how famous or popular or well received their pairing was in Bollywood movies. There were other such equally popular jodis. Viz. Rishi Kapoor- Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra- Moushmi Chaterjee, Rajesh Khanna with Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna with Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna with Asha Parekh etc in my growing up years. Actually I thought that Jaya Bhaduri never made a geat pair on screen with Amitabh, I liked her more with Sanjeev Kumar or even Jeetendra. There were popular pairing in the previous generation of stars too. But I think we have more knowledgeable people in our group to list them. Now what made a pairing popular was how well they looked together or how had their movie fared at the box office or how much recall value their songs had.

Imagine that you reached someplace where a song is playing, probably on a radio. But unfortunately it seems you have missed almost the entire song. What you hear as you get into listening range is just the last one or two lines playing. The words you hear do not seem to be part of the main song lyrics. And the words you hear do not seem to make a coherent sentence. You may just skip the thought and move on. Or if you are more Hindi-film-music inclined, you would start to wonder what the song was and who would have been the singer of this song, of which you have heard just a snippet.
